I agree with you jm. My son has been invited to join 3 different universities' enrichment programs. But I refused - he's 11 and needs to be a kid for a while

without a doubt. As you say he is bright but also needs to be a kid and enjoy life. We wouldn't want him to miss his childhood and get into the adult/mature life too soon. My mid teens ~13-17 were some of the best years of my life.

You have to remember in this day and age teachers are grading on more then just test scores.
See, here's where my mom doesn't know anything.

Say we have a homework assignment worth 5 points. Say I forget to do it, so I get 0/5. Then say we have a test worth 100 points, and I get a 100. Now, my grade is 100/105 which is still an A.
However she says "BUT IT SAYS YOU GOT AN F SO IT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE". Apparently they didn't use points back when she was a student.

Well say for the heck of it you did do the homework assignment & aced the test, your mother would then be happy & therefore so would you. It's kind of like a racing car, comes in for a pitstop, they take four wheels off but only put three back on. Could also be a heart surgeon, you have all those arteries to connect after a heart transplant but you decide not to bother on a couple of them. What your mother is trying to show you is you get in to a habit of leaving things undone or not finished, you are heading nowhere, nothing to do with who had points when they went to school.

So you may be right on that one, but I still don't see what computers has to do with it.

One time my mom took my computer away solely to be mean, and I asked why and she said "well what else would I take away", I shoulda said "my music" as I listen to music almost 24/7, plus I don't mind losing that as much

My son has the same attitude, but his problem is he will not do the homework. For English this semester it is straight F's, he knows the work but how do you motivate him to show the teachers he knows the work. Taking away the computer did Nada. I am not trying to be a hard ass, but what can I do.

If you want him to get his homework done, your best bet is to sit down next to him while he's doing it. Act genuinely interested (even if your not) and ask him questions about what they are studying. He might sit down and do his work if he knows he has company.

I'm lucky, my son loves to read and so I don't have a problem there - phew!

Been there done that also, but when it comes to math forget about it, I am a dummy.

Science, English, Geography, and Social Studies I am good with these. I am able to really help out or tell him where to go to find the answers on the net. He likes to read but the books in High School does not appeal to him he said that they are really lame. I would have thought he would have liked Moby Dick.

See, I try to ask my parents questions so they get the point that I'm doing my homework... but most of it's so easy I don't need their help! And then they get the idea that I don't do it at all

They are like "the grades don't lie", one reason I hate Edline

I get one 0, do the rest of the homework and they act like it's the end of the world. Things were much better before they put grades online

Well Danny if it makes you feel any better my son says the same thing you do on the grades. He may get an A on his report card but once in a while he gets a 0 for home work not done.

Even though his final grade was an A, his home work not being done is not acceptable.

You are getting ready for the real word and collage, home work skills are important.
Once you get out of high school no one will care or get on your case if you home work isn’t done but it will take your final grades down. And that is where the grades are most important.
Your parents are just looking out for you and your future; they want you to have a good one from what you’re saying here.

I guess I try to keep an open mind on things like that when it comes to my son. But I still want him to do his best.

Lately I have the opposite problem with my son, for the past few months he has not wanted to use his computer and I want him to be using it to learn certain things on it.
My son tells me when he grows up he want to make computer games cool computer games. Well if that is really what he wants to do there is much for him to start learning now on the computer that he seems to have no interest in. Now that he has PS2 that is what he wants to do? I never had to put a time limit on that with him, but then again he never plays for more then 1 or 2 hours at a time and not everyday.

And yes If his grades start dropping I take PS2 away. Since he has lost PS2 a few times he now works on his school work then plays PS2.
