if they had caused "lacks" only
seagate has severe problems with at least 4 different series of their drives:
* Barracuda 7200.11
* DiamondMax 22
* Barracuda ES.2 SATA
* SV35
main trouble with those drives is sudden death!
seagate offers a tool by the name of drive detect to check what drive you have
download it HERE and see if your drive is among those with potential problems:
c.f. attached picture
if your modell and number is among those listed, contact seagte and let them know: name of model, serial number AND firmware revision at: discsupport@seagate.com
they say to send you a new firmware which should eliminate the problemsAttached Files -

I have a question, why doesn't Western Digital have problems like this. I can't remember the last time WD had a problem similar to this.Star Baby Girl, Born March,1997 Died June 30th 2007 6:35 PM.Comment

Curious.
My 1.5TB disk shut is self down some days ago while I was writing to it. Tried to restart the computer some times but it was stone dead. I then let the computer be off for some hours and then it woke up to life again.
Is there some type of heat detector in these disks that makes them shut down if they get over heated?

Yes, most drives have a temperature IC built in these days but it seems like the drive would have to get mighty hot for it to shut itself down. Do you have windows power management spinning the drive down when not active? If so try shutting it off so the drive always spins.
Otherwise it sounds like it’s time to get an RMA.They tried to Assimilate me and failed!Comment

Usually having windows spin the drive down when not in use is good for machines that are left running 24/7. But if you power your system down at the end of the day I normally turn off power management on the hard disk. Especially if windows is having a hard time waking the drive up when it’s called for.
Edited: Does the drive feel warm/hot to the touch after running it for awhile?
If so I'd RMA it.Last edited by Abuilder; 8 Feb 2009, 12:31 PM.They tried to Assimilate me and failed!Comment
