Do you need to use the MDS file for single layer burns?

    Hi,

I have always used the MDS file to burn DL media. Now I have to burn a single layer DVD ripped with DVDD. Do I still use the MDS file and Imgburn with take care of the rest OR do I use the ISO file directly with Imgburn (and single layer media)?

Thanks a ton to all you guys/gals out there, helping newbies like me.

Using the .mds for single layer works just fine

With the single layer disc I burn them from ISO files with Imagburn.

      @mig$y,
What is the purpose of the .MDS file I am seeing more of this the more I play with DVDD and Imagburn?

Or should I say what is the real difference between the 2?

The .mds file is more or less only holding the info about where the layer break position is located. And that is only needed if you do burn DL discs.

Ok I have ripped from a dvd as a .ISO and I noticed that DVDD put the .ISO and a .MDS file in the same folder.

When I went to burn it asks me which file I want to burn the .ISO was 3.60 gig and the other was much smaller.

          I dont get it.

Don't know why you have the setting in DVD Decrypter to create a .mds file for a single layer ISO. Only pure waste of hard disk space.

The .mds file is like a post-it note to tell the burning program how it shall burn the .ISO file (= where the layer break will be inserted).

I am with you so far.. so what am I doing wrong that I am getting both when trying to rip as a .ISO ?

Alos just wondering how do I use it with a dual layer disc. It seems you have to choose one or the other when burning.

It's also handy if you still use a FAT 32 partition.

                Chetwood did a good FAQ

If you want to burn your ripped .ISO file to DL media - then load the .mds file in the burning program, such as ImgBurn.

Another case when you do need to have an .mds file even if the ISO is only from a single sided DVD is if you have a FAT32 system on your hard disk. The limitation of 1Gb file size will give you a set of ISO files. Such as Christie.001, Christie.002 and then Christie.mds. Perhaps that is the files you are getting when you rip the files to an ISO file?

It can also be that you have the setting in DVD Decrypter (in the ISO Read section of the settings) to create a .mds file automatically.

I will check my settings next time on that. Thanks,

Ok now how do I load the other file into Imagburn for a dual layer disc?

Sorry if these question seem stupid I am just now really begining to play with the dual layers.

I have dabbled a bit with dual layer before but now am working more and more with them.

Just load the .mds file into ImgBurn. The same way as if it had been an .iso file.
