I was not aware of the 1.4.15.0 version, it must have only come out very recently. I'll try that for my next burn.

How about a burning log?

Read and implement the Golden Rules of Burning. In particular, use Verbatins/TYs, make sure firmware is up to date, burn at a reasonable speed and ensure DMA is on.

Some players are more tolerant of poor burns/bad media than others.

OK, here's what I think you mean by the burn log. BTW, I've had a quick look at the "Golden Rules of Burning" and there may be a few things I need to change on my system or about the way I burn. So perhaps there's nothing at all wrong with 1.4.14.0 but it's something about the way I burn that's less than perfect, causing a less-than-robust burn. Here's the log anyway. Switch to ImgBurn. And remember to verify your burns.

Also try new media as advised before.

Thanks blutach. I had noticed the burn speed about 2 minutes before I saw your post, and have now set it at 4x. Thought I'd already done so.

Will update the firmware. I hadn't done that previously as the warnings about destroying my drive put me off!

And will use ImgBurn.

But I have a 50-pack of the Sony media, I bought those as various web searches and comments from others suggested it was good gear. I hope I won't have to give the rest of them away....

Safe mode? I hadn't thought of that, but sounds like a good move, will do it.

Thanks for that link jm1647, although I'm not likely to be doing much burning so if slowing it down to 4x makes the burns better then no problem.

BTW, it was taking me about 30 minutes to burn a 120 minute movie, so I assumed it was going at 4x anyway, although the log reported 16x.

Wow, that is too long. It should be 13 minutes. Now, I know Ner0 reports 16x when it actually isn't (that's the max it gets to), but something's wrong here.

It says DMA is on, but that could be incorrect. Fix the DMA by uninstalling both channels in turn and rebooting. Check DMA in the BIOS, too.

As well, it would seem that your burner is struggling with these disks - it might be it doesn't like them or the burner needs a clean.

OK, both Primary and Master in both IDE channels had DMA on, and all four were saying Mode 2.

I Uninstalled them in turn, rebooted and they are all still on DMA Mode 2.

But, I had a look in BIOS, and all four (Primary/Secondary Master/Slave) PIO are set to Auto (although I have the option to set these up to Mode 1-4).

And, all four in BIOS (Primary/Secondary Master/Slave) UDMA are set to Disabled. I'll enable these and see what happens. :O

BTW, I've 3 HDDs on my machine and 1 DVD burner, but I've just realised that DVDshrink by default writes the pre-burning file to my biggest HDD which happens to be the slave on the secondary IDE channel (the DVD burner is the Master on this channel). This may not be efficient, i.e., my PC is writing from slave HDD to master DVD on the same IDE channel. Next burn I'll make sure it writes to the DVD from an HDD on the primary IDE channel and see if anything changes speed-wise.

Edit:- OK, I set all the UDMA settings to Auto in BIOS, and Device Manager now reports everything on the Primary IDE as Mode 5 and the Secondary ones as Mode 4 and Mode 5. So that should speed things up. It seems weird that they UDMA was disabled in BIOS but Device Manager didn't seem to realise this.

Right, time to flash my burner. Thanks for the advice folks, I'll update this later and let anyone interested know how it went.

1. Add a controller card, never have a hard drive and a burner on the same cable, try to arrange your drives so they never talk to each other over the same cable. Everything will be more efficient with your data drives as standalone masters on a controller, leaving your system drive standalone master.

2. Those new liteon drives won't hardly do 4X on new media, and if your computer is properly setup hardware and software wise, will probably burn best at 8 or 12X.

3. rip to the data drive that's sharing with the burner, then shrink to a drive on the primary and burn back to the burner on the secondary(until you get your computer set up right)
