I wiped/shredded those drives before using them for storage, I don't see how anything is left on there as far as boot files go.

At any rate, I seem to have it working correctly (for now).

Upon booting, one of the screens says to press f3 to configure raid/ boot sequence/more. I did that and the next screen gave me the option of choosing the Hard drive that I wanted to use for boot, & the SATA Seagate was listed there as an option; I selected the seagate as the boot drive, exited the screen; Everything went fine.

As a test, powered down & turned pc on again just to see if the settings held, & they did! So, it would seem as if that did the trick. Actually, I forgot to plug the burners back into the mobo ide 1, so I have to do that yet. I don't forsee any problems with that, though.

It would appear that my problem was not configuring the boot sequence properly as mentioned prev. with the controller card/ boot up screen. Still seems odd to me - I don't understand why the SATA is not listed in the BIOS for me to configure the boot sequence there... Oh well, live & learn

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I appreciate it!

      cheers, katz

Well, I spoke too soon! Scratch the previous post! Started the pc this morning, & all is not well. What I am finding out is, this thing will not boot with the IDE Hard drives connected to the controller card. When I connect them that way, I keep getting the "NTLDR" is missing", & it won't boot from the SATA drive.

If I connect them to IDE 1 on the mainboard, it will boot from the SATA with no probs. I would like to set it up with the IDE drives on the card, but I don't know what else to do. Suggestions?

              Hard Disk Boot Priority:
This item selects the hard disks booting priority. By pressing <Enter> key, you can enter its submenu
where the hard disks detected can be selected for the booting sequence to boot up system.

              does the sata show here?

              turn off boot other device

but first what does disk management show for the status of all those drives?

In the BIOS, yes. I have the SATA set as 1rst in the sequence.

Disc management shows all drives as active

there's your problem all 3 disks are active and none is specified as system

                  now paste your boot.ini file

don't change anything but there are boot files somewhere in the root directory of one of the pata drives

everything else looks good, are there any boot files on any of the pata drives?

If there are, I sure can't find them with windows search. I checked view hidden folders, etc.

I found this - do you think it applies here?

most definitely, unfortunately it's an advanced procedure

have you unchecked hide protected operating system files and applied to all folders as I specify in my power user sticky?

Well, I muck around in the registry a bit, I'm not afraid of it if I have to go that route.

Yes, I did that. I believe I know where you are going here; No boot files show up on those ide drives...

How does that happen? I don't ever recall manually setting up a "system" drive in all the pc's I've assembled/upgraded, & I've never encountered a problem in the past that I know of. Doesn't the os do all that automatically?

                              1. your system serial drive will not boot if the pata's are disconnected?
                              2. the pata drives were hooked up when you installed windows?
                              3. if the above are true then windows is looking for something on one of those drives to boot with?

                              screen shot drive C?

You should have just left the optical drives on the card - which I believe I may have told you in the crossposted thread over at my forum.

The card you're running DOES use a Silicon Image 680 chipset so it's fine for optical drives. Had one running myself just fine up until last week when I removed it in favour of an ITE chipset one.

I put links to the latest bios / drivers for it in the one at my forum. Maybe go take a look at it again and don't start messing with boot.ini if you don't know what you're doing.
