Hey guys! I'm out of town and will return this Saturday. First thing I'm doing when I walk in the door is scan for viruses (although I'm PRETTY sure AVG did a scan when I was home when this mess was going on).

Next, I'm going to do a spyware check. Could be the cause.

If nothing else then I'll do a system restore. HOPEFULLY that will work!

I agree with you 3 people out of whatever is not bad BUT the fact that all of a sudden 3 people or however many are having the exact same problem should tell us something.

What movies were you guys backing up? I first backed up my copy of Da Vinci Code then my copy of RV both with Sony Arcoss on them. I'm THINKING SONY has added another little deal to mess with us. Any ideas on if this can happen? System restore should work. Glad I have this site so that I can remember how long ago it was that I need to go back to restore the system.

Has anyone with this problem done a SUCCESSFUL system restore? What movies were you guys working on when the problem occured?

Get WinDbg from the Microsoft website (search for it).

        Install and run WinDbg.

        Click 'File' -> 'Open Executable...'

Browse to and select the ImgBurn.exe file from 'C:\Program Files\ImgBurn\' or wherever.

It should then proceed to open.... but stop very quickly - it hasn't actually started yet, you need to click 'Debug' -> 'Go' (or just press F5).

It'll then load properly and you might get another Break instruction exception (first chance exception) in the WinDbg logging window.

Just copy + paste all that stuff so we can see where it's dying.

Sounds like a plan! I'll be doing this when I return from vacation on Saturday. If not I've got some other tricks up my sleeve from talking to people like system restore to earlier date (although I'm not sure it will work). Will get back to you soon!
          Thanks!

Even though the system restore may fix it, it doesn't really help us (as in the world at large!) at finding what's causing it to suddenly stop working.

It's an odd situation to be in and I'd very much like to find out what's behind it

I HATE to go soooooo off topic here but... I've been talking to 4 different people who either-don't have a clue, partially have a clue, or are completely wrong.

I just need to know a few things about system recovery.

1)do you press F10 on windows xp and go from there to (safe mode I guess) recover? Or do you go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore??

2)Say I go back to Dec. 14 or something. Will I lose ALL files, information, and programs saved after that point OR will (like someone told me) it repair those programs that have errors and I won't lose anything?

I think that's all I need to know. Found the WinDBG and will get right to work on all this on Saturday night. Thanks for the help! Hope my information from that will help you guys in return!
                Thanks!

Go start > all programs etc.

Last thing and I promise to no longer "hi-jack" the thread... does system restore erase MP3's that I had placed on my computer AFTER the problems occured? Thanks!

I have the same problem, " report to Microsoft...". I thought my registry was messed up so I put in an older drive, made my main drive the slave and deleted, defragged, reformatted the drive, then reloaded my software. Using Xp home with sp2, everything worked fine intially but with the first update which was the 1.5 windows installer and another item, the same problem occurred. If you go into clean boot mode it will work again.
