I would hope the drive is on the Intel SATA ports and not the Gigabyte (JM) ones!

This is the current set up. I have not read anything yet on the jmicron issue. I however did not read the MB manual when I built this rig. I will google jmicron.

the samsung looks like it's on the intel

          maybe just a bad drive

the pata drive is on the jmicron, which is the one that usually causes problems

          go figure

I had two liteon drives give me the failed to finalize errors on a ASUS P5K deluxe WiFi mobo when burning Verb MKM001 +R DL discs.

The first was a SATA dvd LH-20A1L with BL04 then BL05 firmware. I RMA'd the drive (newegg paid shipping both ways: Thank you newegg) and got the second, DH20A4P (IDE) (firmware 9P54) hooked up to the jmicron controller and got the finalize error. The O/S is win xp SP2.

I took my trusty Plex 716 (IDE) which never had a prob burning +R DL from my older system IC7-G (ICH5R shipset), running Win XP SP1a, and put it in the P5K and burned a DL no problem.

Next, I put the DH20A4P on my IC7-G (WinXP SP1a) and burned +r DL with no finalize error.

After many long hours with google, I managed to replace the SP2 atapi.sys driver on P5K with one from SP1a (IC7-G system). Hooked the DH20A4P back up to the P5K Deluxe and burned DL no problem, no finalize error. There appears to be a problem with the WinXP SP2 atapi.sys v 5.10.2600.2180 driver and certain DVD burners like Liteon.

When I put the P5K system together, I never did install the jmicron driver, just what ever got loaded w/ WinXP SP2.

I used Replacer.cmd to copy the atapi.sys from my SP1a (old system) to three folders (\windows\driver cache, \windows\system32\dllcache, and \windows\system32\drivers.

Forum discussion: This is annoying the crap out of me. This was the reason I went back to SP1 from SP2 RC2 in the first place. How can Microsoft release the same crappy atapi as in their Beta versions. This basically makes my CD-Writer and windows lag as hell. Every

(look about 17 posts down, give or take afew).

Now I only burned 1 +R DL so far with this fix, but this is the best success I've had.

            Kindest Regards

I wonder if the SP3 one is any different to SP2?

If it was a real problem with it surely nobody would be able to burn anything to those disc?!

I don't pretend to understand. What is so special about finalizing a +R DL versus a SL???

BTW what does 'DVD+R Reserve Track' do?

                Regards

It sends the 'reserve track' command to the drive before it starts writing - that way the driveal ready knows how much data to expect and can update the disc's TOC or whatever accordingly.

                    thank you.

One more question: What does checking DVD+R Finalise Disc (Min. Radius) do? It is checked by default. What happens if un-checked?

It sets a 'flag' (one bit in one byte) in the command used to finalise the disc.

When the flag is set, the drive will perform padding so that at least 1GB is burnt to the disc. This is done in order to achieve maximum compatibility with drives when reading back.

So basically, you shouldn't ever have a reason to turn it off.
