Lightning, sorry for the repetitiveness. I panicked and sent out distress signals at both sites. Will stick with seeking help here, since I know that you pop in here as well. Thanks.

The verdict from Dell regarding my CD/DVD-Rom Drive is that it is fried. Luckily, I am still under warranty and they are shipping me a new one on Monday.

Thanks to all of you, Lightning UK!, Blutach and Chewy for your helpful suggestions. I always know that I can come here if I don't understand something about my computer or some of the programs that I run on it and somebody will step up and offer good advice.

Just to give out a gut response to this, every time this has happened to me it was Firmware Related, firmware, or, the "Autorun = 1" entries in the registry changed them selves magically into "Autorun = 0"

But once I accidentally deleted my Drives, if that happens, you gotta do a system restore, cos an In Place XP Re-install will nto ghet them back.
