    Stats:

For the week ending 29th September 2012, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 44.23% vs 55.77%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $88.01 million
DVD sales total spending: $110.98 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

As predicted, a record breaking week for Blu-ray, as the release of Marvel's The Avengers on Blu-ray wrecked havoc not only the other new releases of the week, but on the long standing Blu-ray market share record. Previously clocked in at just over 40%, this has been smashed easily this week thanks to an excellent performance on Blu-ray for Marvel's mega-hit. The Avengers also allowed some of the, I guess you would call prequels, to get back into the top 10, including Thor, Captain America and Iron Man 2.

In a very distant second place was Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1, selling nearly 35 times less than The Avengers. This was yet another hit on Blu-ray.

And so was Bond 50: Celebrating Five Decades of Bond 007, in 4th place. Resident Evil: Damnation came 7th.

Rounding off the new releases in the Blu-ray top 10 was American Horror Story: The Complete First Season, in 9th place.

Blu-ray revenue was at a high for 2012, but failed to break the record set back in December or $113m.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
    1. Marvel's The Avengers
    2. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1
    3. Snow White and the Huntsman
    4. Bond 50: Celebrating Five Decades of Bond 007
    5. Thor
    6. Captain America: The First Avenger
    7. Resident Evil: Damnation
    8. Iron Man 2
    9. American Horror Story: The Complete First Season
    10. The Cabin in the Woods

    Blu-ray Share:

Almost all of the new releases this week did fantastically on Blu-ray (although The Avengers, having sold so many copies, was the one really dictating things). Bond 50's Blu-ray sales share of 90.82% - meaning 9 in 10 copies of the box set that was sold was on Blu-ray - was perhaps to be expected, but The Avengers' 71.65% was simply amazing.

The Avengers was also available on Blu-ray 3D, with a sales share of 23%. This means that just the Blu-ray 3D version nearly sold as many copies as all DVD-only editions (23% vs 28.35%)! Making The Avengers combo edition available in DVD packaging (and so allowed it to be placed on the DVD shelves in stores) might have made the difference, as the combo version was only $5 more than the DVD-only bare bones edition, at least according to Amazon pricing.

The Avengers also helped to spur sales in the other "prequel" movies, most of them doing very well on the sales share charts too.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1 was just behind The Avengers with 71.45%, and Resident Evil: Damnation's 59.65% was also a great result.

Out of the new releases in the top 10, only American Horror Story: The Complete First Season failed to breach the 50% mark, with 36.36%, but this in itself was a very good result for a TV series box set.

The stats for the week ending 1st October 2011 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

While DVD revenue practically remained the same when comparing this week to the same week last year, Blu-ray revenue more than doubled. The same week last year wasn't exactly a quiet week either, with Transformers: Dark of the Moon being the new release, but The Avengers' more than double box office takings appears to have translated directly to at least Blu-ray revenue.

After two all red weeks, we now have an all green week!

Blu-ray sales increased by $44.25m (up 101.1%), while DVD sales increased by a negligible $0.11m (up 0.1%) producing an overall gain of $44.36 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 28.3% to 44.23%.

Disney's Cinderella is coming out on Blu-ray in a "Diamond Edition", and these sorts of Disney releases, being Blu-ray exclusives, always helped market share and revenue - so another big week next week for Blu-ray!

      Stats:

For the week ending 6th October 2012, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue:
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 34.41% vs 65.59%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $50.72 million
DVD sales total spending: $96.70 million

      These stats available from here:

      Home Media Magazine

      Top 10:

Despite the Blu-ray exclusive release of a Disney classic, something that usually raises Blu-ray market share, market share actually fell compared to last week's spectacular results due to the slowing down sales of The Avengers, particularly on Blu-ray.

Cinderella: Diamond Edition was the week's top selling new Blu-ray release, but The Avengers held on to the actual top spot, but only barely.

In a distant third place was Dark Shadows, and that was basically it for new releases in the Blu-ray top 10.

In the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, Downton Abbey: Seasons One & Two arrived in 14th, but two other new releases, How I Met Your Mother: The Complete Season 7 and The Carol Burnett Show: Carol's Favorites, were all DVD exclusives.

So after a really busy week, a relatively quiet one in terms of new releases, but still one that had an above average set of market share and revenue figures for Blu-ray.

Prometheus and E.T. lands on Blu-ray next week, so things may heat up again, or at least manage to maintain the current levels and compensate for falling sales of The Avengers.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
      1. Marvel's The Avengers
      2. *Cinderella: Diamond Edition
      3. Dark Shadows
      4. Snow White and the Huntsman
      5. The Hunger Games
      6. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1
      7. Bond 50: Celebrating Five Decades of Bond 007
      8. Battleship
      9. Thor
      10. Captain America: The First Avenger

      Blu-ray Share:

Part of the reason Blu-ray market share fell was because while The Avengers was still the best seller on Blu-ray for the week, its Blu-ray sales share fell from last week's 71.45% to 56.48%. Still a fantastic set of numbers, but nowhere as spectacular, and not enough to keep Blu-ray market share at the same level as last week, even with the Blu-ray exclusive (ie. 100% Blu-ray sales share) Cinderella.

      Dark Shadows debuts at 38%.

No new Blu-ray 3D releases for the week, but the 3D version of The Avengers managed a sales share of 19%, down from the 23% last week.

From an all green week last week, to an all red one this week, but things are not as bad as it looks. Because as it happens, this time last year was the high point for Blu-ray market share thanks to the release of The Lion King on Blu-ray (as an exclusive) for the first time.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $24.09m (down 32.2%), while DVD sales decreasing by a smaller amount of $13.81m (down 12.5%) producing an overall loss of $37.9 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share shrank, from 40.37% to 34.41%.

        Stats:

For the week ending 13th October 2012, here are the stats:

        Percentage of revenue:
        Blu-ray vs DVD: 33.42% vs 66.58%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $46.02 million

        Top 10:

Prometheus debuts this week on Blu-ray and despite the sci-fi movie doing fantastically on Blu-ray, overall Blu-ray market share still dropped compared to recent weeks (but only slightly). This is a bit hard to understand, given that E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was also available for the first time on Blu-ray, and while not a Blu-ray exclusive, it also did fantastically on the HD format.

While Blu-ray market share is still higher than average, the drop in recent weeks can only be attributed to the slowing sales of The Avengers, which if you can remember, broke market share records when it was released.

Prometheus did dominate the Blu-ray sales charts, outselling the second placed The Avengers by almost 4 to 1. E.T. came 4th, behind Cinderalla.

As for the other new releases, Rock of Ages came 5th, The Raven was 7th and CM Punk: Best in the World came 10th.

A couple of new releases also made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but not the Blu-ray top 10. These include Monster High: Ghouls Rule (DVD exclusive), Jeff Dunham: Minding the Monsters (10th on combined list, 14th on Blu-ray list), Bones: The Complete Seventh Season (11th on combined list), and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Complete Season 7 (15th on combined list).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
        1. Prometheus
        2. Marvel's The Avengers
        3. *Cinderella: Diamond Edition
        4. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
        5. Rock of Ages
        6. Dark Shadows
        7. The Raven
        8. Snow White and the Huntsman
        9. The Hunger Games
        10. CM Punk: Best in the World

        Blu-ray Share:

While E.T's Blu-ray sales share of 80.79% was practically expected, given the age of the title and it's long term availability on DVD, Prometheus's 75.74% was potentially much more significant. This means that more than 3 in 4 copies of Prometheus was sold on Blu-ray compared to DVD, and with this sort of numbers, it's easy to see why some believe DVD is on the way out. This is probably the best set of Blu-ray sales share results for an A-list release.

For the other new releases, The Raven got 46.22%, CM Punk: Best in the World had 43.51%, Rock of Ages managed 35.98%.

The rest of the new releases didn't do as well on Blu-ray. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Complete Season 7 managed 21%, Jeff Dunham: Minding the Monsters had 18% and Bones: The Complete Seventh Season only had 10%.

Prometheus was also available on 3D, with a sales share of 25% (meaning 1 in 3 Blu-ray or combo copies sold was the Blu-ray 3D version) - in fact, the Blu-ray 3D version may have outsold all DVD copies of the film, which is kind of amazing when you think about it.

          Stats:

For the week ending 20th October 2012, here are the stats:

          Percentage of revenue:
          Blu-ray vs DVD: 29.05% vs 70.95%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $40.40 million
DVD sales total spending: $98.69 million

          These stats available from here:

          Top 10:

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted was the week's best seller, but despite a great performance on Blu-ray, overall Blu-ray market share actually dropped to below 30% for the first time in a month, thanks to rising DVD revenue and falling Blu-ray revenue compared to the previous week.

The drop in Blu-ray market share is made stranger by the fact that the Blu-ray 3D version of Avatar was also released during the week, a Blu-ray exclusive release that managed to get as high as 3rd place on the Blu-ray sales charts. The placing does include all versions of Avatar, but the DVD only edition only managed to be 1% of total sales (that's not a typo!), so for all practical considerations, this was a Blu-ray exclusive.

Sandwiched between Madagascar and Avatar was Prometheus, and it continued to sell much stronger on Blu-ray than on DVD.

Moonrise Kingdom came 5th, while That's My Boy debuts at 8th.

In 9th was Chernobyl Diaries, and the 10th place was taken by Mad Men: Season Five.

The drop in Blu-ray market share, despite the top selling titles all suggesting a higher market share figure, could be due to several releases that wasn't available on Blu-ray. 2016: Obama's America got as high as 4th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, and Madagascar: The Complete Collection and Psych: The Complete Sixth Season was 16th and 19th respectively - none were available on Blu-ray.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
          1. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
          2. Prometheus
          3. Marvel's The Avengers
          4. Avatar
          5. *Cinderella: Diamond Edition
          6. Moonrise Kingdom
          7. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
          8. That's My Boy
          9. Chernobyl Diaries
          10. Mad Men: Season Five

          Blu-ray Share:

The Blu-ray market share of just over 29% for the week is, as mentioned before, somewhat surprising considering the performance of most of the top 10 releases.

Avatar had a Blu-ray sales share of 99%, meaning the DVD only edition only accounted for 1% of all sales. The 3D version, which was new to retail this week, had a sales share of 32.66% - meaning 1 in 3 new copies of Avatar sold for the week was on the 3D format.

Moonrise Kingdom did extremely well on Blu-ray for a title of this genre, with 57.07%.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted did well for an animated title with a Blu-ray sales share of 56.26%. It too was available on Blu-ray 3D, with a sales share of 13.45%.

Chernobyl Diaries managed 38.66%, just ahead of That's My Boy at 37.33%. Mad Men: Season 5 got 34.53%.

With none of the new releases dipping below 30% in sales share, this is why it surprises me that overall Blu-ray market share was below this mark.

The Blu-ray exclusive release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the first A-lister to receive the Blu-ray exclusive release treatment, was what made this time last year such a great week for Blu-ray.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $21.19m (down 34.4%), while DVD sales increased slightly by $1.75m (up 1.8%) producing an overall loss of $19.44 million in combined revenue.

            Top 10:

A small collection of new releases, but none were mega hits, and so Blu-ray revenue declined compared to last week. With DVD revenue growing at the same time, Blu-ray market share declined too.

The direct to video Secret of the Wings was the best selling Blu-ray of the week, quite easily outselling the second placed Magic Mike.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was very closely behind in 3rd place.

Quite a bit way behind was Madea's Witness Protection, in 9th place, with 10th place being occupied by Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Season Four.

Two more titles made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but not the Blu-ray top 10. Tyler Perry's I Don't Want to Do Wrong was a DVD only release, while Seeking a Friend for the End of the World just missed out, coming in at 11th on the Blu-ray only charts.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
            1. Secret of the Wings
            2. Magic Mike
            3. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
            4. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

            7. *Cinderella: Diamond Edition
            8. Avatar
            9. Madea's Witness Protection
            10. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Season Four

            Blu-ray Share:

Of all the new releases, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter had the best Blu-ray sales share, with 61.59% of all disc sales belonging to the HD format. And despite not getting into the Blu-ray top 10, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World's Blu-ray edition also managed to outsell its DVD edition - the Blu-ray sales share was 53.97%.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Season Four got 46.43%, but the other new releases did not make the sales share top 20. Secret of the Wings got 38%, with Magic Mike on 33%. Madea's Witness Protection only managed 14%.

A couple of the new releases were also available on 3D. Secret of the Wings's Blu-ray 3D sales share was 10.59% (more than 1 in 4 Blu-ray copies sold), and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter's 3D sales share was 14.35%.

This time last year, Captain America: The First Avenger was the top selling Blu-ray release, so with good reason, Blu-ray revenue and market share was down this week compared to back then. But DVD revenue did rise, allowing for overall revenue to rise slightly too.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $10.97m (down 21.6%), while DVD sales increased by $12.31m (up 12.7%) producing an overall gain of $1.34 million in combined revenue.

              Stats:

For the week ending 3rd November 2012, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue:
              Blu-ray vs DVD: 23.99% vs 76.01%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $30.39 million
DVD sales total spending: $96.30 million

              These stats available from here:

              Home Media Magazine

              Top 10:

A very quiet week in terms of new releases, and so as expected, Blu-ray revenue and market share both dropped compared to recent weeks.

The only notable new release, and the only one that made the Blu-ray top 10, was The Campaign. It was easily the best selling title of the week on Blu-ray.

A Christmas Story 2 was also new, but failed to make the Blu-ray top 20.

And that was it, basically. The Amazing Spider-Man debuts next week, so things should heat up a little.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
              1. The Campaign
              2. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
              3. Secret of the Wings
              4. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
              5. Prometheus
              6. Marvel's The Avengers
              7. *Cinderella: Diamond Edition
              8. Magic Mike
              9. Dark Shadows
              10. Rock of Ages

              Blu-ray Share:

The Campaign got off to a relatively good start on Blu-ray, with 41.29% of all discs sales belonging to the HD format.

A Christmas Story 2 managed only a 19% Blu-ray sales share, which is probably why it didn't manage to rank in the Blu-ray sales top 20 list.

Neither of these releases were available on 3D.

                Top 10:

The Amazing Spider-Man was the week's top selling release, blowing away all other competition with ease. The new Spider-Man movie also did exceptionally well on Blu-ray, and this helped Blu-ray revenue and market share to post a rise compared to last week.

In a distant second place was Arthur Christmas.

A couple of new releases made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but not the Blu-ray top 10. These include Fire With Fire in 13th (and 16th on the Blu-ray only charts), Prep & Landing: Totally Tinsel Collection in 14th (Blu-ray chart: 12th), and in 20th place, the DVD only Adventures in Lalaloopsy Land: Holiday Gift Set.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                1. The Amazing Spider-Man
                2. Arthur Christmas
                3. Marvel's The Avengers
                4. The Campaign
                5. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
                6. *Cinderella: Diamond Edition
                7. Secret of the Wings
                8. Prometheus
                9. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
                10. Firefly: The Complete Series

                Blu-ray Share:

The Amazing Spider-Man has an amazing debut on Blu-ray, with 71.98% of all discs purchased belonging to the Blu-ray and combo editions. A 70%+ BD sales share seems to be less of a rarity these days for A-list releases.

Prep & Landing: Totally Tinsel Collection was the next best new release in terms of BD sales share, with 50.51%. Arthur Christmas managed 42.38%, and Fire With Fire got 33%.

Both of the top Blu-ray sellers were available on Blu-ray 3D. The Amazing Spider-Man managed a BD3D sales share of 16.89%, with Arthur Christmas on 9.25%.

Despite the release of an A-lister this week, it was another "all red" week. DVD revenue, Blu-ray revenue and Blu-ray market share all sank compared to the same week last year, which was again a big release week with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (added to the still strong results from Cars 2 a week earlier).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $18.09m (down 33.8%), while DVD sales decreased by $36.12m (down 27.9%) producing an overall loss of $54.21 million in combined revenue.

                  Top 10:

The release of Pixar's Brave helped Blu-ray to record a rise in revenue and market share compared to last week, with market share back in the 30% range for the first time since mid October.

Blu-ray revenue also rose above $50m for the first time since early October, as Brave easily outsold the second placed The Amazing Spider-Man.

Further back in 3rd place was Savages, closely followed by the 4th placed The Watch.

In 10th place was the Blu-ray exclusive re-release of Lawrence of Arabia.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                  1. Brave

                  9. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
                  10. Lawrence of Arabia

                  Blu-ray Share:

Brave debuts on Blu-ray with a healthy 50.76% BD sales share, so with the Blu-ray and combo versions just managing to outsell the DVD-only edition.

Savages was actually had the best BD sales share out of all the new releases (other than the Blu-ray exclusive Lawrence of Arabia) with 56.14%. The Watch had 46.05%, which is pretty good for a comedy title.

Brave was also available on Blu-ray 3D, with a BD3D sales share of 11.57%.

                    Stats:

For the week ending 24th November 2012, here are the stats:

                    Percentage of revenue:
                    Blu-ray vs DVD: 28.45% vs 71.55%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $110.60 million

                    Top 10:

It's Black Friday sales week, and as expected, both DVD and Blu-ray revenue rose to the year's high point. Blu-ray revenue broke through the $100m barrier for only the third time in the format's history. While this would suggest a record Blu-ray market share figure, but the reality is that Black Friday is a bigger thing for DVD than for Blu-ray due to the budget nature of the DVD format, and as a result, Blu-ray market share actually dropped back below 30%.

BF week is not traditionally a week for new releases, as it tends to get lost in the big sale. As a result, the only notable new release for the week was The Expendables 2, which came second in the Blu-ray top 20 charts, selling just over half as many copies as last week's number one, Brave.

Instead of looking at new releases, the best way to look at this week is to compare it with last year's BF week. Blu-ray revenue recorded an impressive 24.6% increase compared to BF 2011. It is impressive because BF 2011 only managed a 5% increase on BF 2010 for Blu-ray revenue. Even more impressive was the 7.6% decline in DVD revenue, which seems to suggest the decline of the DVD format has slowed (last year's decline was 16.5%). So while overall revenue is still down compared to BF 2011, it was only down a minuscule and negligible 0.27%. Given the tremendous strength of digital downloads and streaming, which is cannibalising DVD's revenue, the flat total revenue figure actually represent a fantastic set of results for the home video industry.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                    1. Brave
                    2. The Expendables 2
                    3. The Amazing Spider-Man
                    4. The Hunger Games
                    5. Prometheus
                    6. Cinderella: Diamond Edition
                    7. Marvel's The Avengers
                    8. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
                    9. Wrath of the Titans
                    10. Secret of the Wings

                    Blu-ray Share:

The Expendables 2's 51.66% sales share for the Blu-ray edition of the film was a good set of results.

With the only new release out of the way (which wasn't available on Blu-ray 3D), let's look at the comparison to last year's Black Friday sales. Last year, the Blu-ray market share was at 22.77%, while this year's market share rose to 28.45%. This right here is probably the best indication of Blu-ray's real growth in the last year. BF 2010's Blu-ray market share was 18.94%, so the growth has been steady, if not accelerating (this is hard to conclude definitively since market share varies a lot depending on recently released titles, and for BF, what's actually on sale).

For the week ending 1st December 2012, here are the stats:

                      Blu-ray vs DVD: 29.78% vs 70.22%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $64.88 million

                      These stats available from here:

                      Home Media Magazine

                      Top 10:

Black Friday may have been gone, but the all important Cyber Monday week is included in this week's set of results, and Blu-ray and DVD spending were both still at a comparatively high level for the week ending 1st December 2012. In fact, Blu-ray market share actually rose compared to the heavily DVD discounting BF week.

New releases were a bit more plentiful this week compared to the last, with Men in Black 3 leading the pack, just managing to outsell Brave on Blu-ray, but not doing well enough on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts to actually beat Brave.

ParaNorman was in third place, selling half as many copies as MIB III, while Lawless rounded out the new releases in the Blu-ray top 10 at 5th place.

One more title made the combined disc charts, but not the Blu-ray only chart: Sparkle came in 19th.

Comparing this post BF/Cyber Monday week to last year's one, Blu-ray spending is up nearly 17%. But unlike last week where the rise in Blu-ray popularity managed to offset losses to DVD, this week, DVD's losses were much more prominent, leading to a 5% drop in total revenue.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                      1. Men in Black 3
                      2. Brave
                      3. ParaNorman
                      4. The Expendables 2
                      5. Lawless
                      6. The Amazing Spider-Man
                      7. Prometheus
                      8. Bond 50: Celebrating Five Decades of Bond 007
                      9. Marvel's The Avengers
                      10. Cinderella: Diamond Edition

                      Blu-ray Share:

Men In Black III debuts on Blu-ray with a very good set of results - with 58.79% of all discs sold belonging to the Blu-ray (and combo) format.

ParaNorman was the next best performing title in terms of Blu-ray sales share, with 45.92%. Lawless was closely behind with 45.59%, with Sparkle further back at 25%.

Both MIB III and ParaNorman were available on Blu-ray 3D. MIB III had a 3D sales share of 9%, while ParaNorman did better at 10%.

Comparing this week with the same week last year, Blu-ray's overall market share rose quite significantly, but that was evident during the BF week as well, a combination of growing Blu-ray demand, and slowing DVD sales (DVD being under attack by both budget priced Blu-ray and combos, as well as digital download and streaming options, so a 12.4% decline in revenue isn't actually too bad when you think about it this way).

                        Top 10:

With the holidays in full swing, we're finally into the busiest sales period of the year.

The Dark Knight Rises was the week's best seller on DVD and Blu-ray, by far. On Blu-ray, it outsold the seconded placed title by almost 5 to 1, and considering the second placed title was the The Dark Knight Trilogy box set, it's far to assume that this week was all about the caped crusader.

Finding Nemo, first time on Blu-ray, managed to get as high as third place on the sales charts.

There were two more new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but only one of them made the Blu-ray only top 20. The Odd Life of Timothy Green was 8th on the Blu-ray sales charts.

Blu-ray revenue broke through the $100 million barrier for only the second time in 2012, up 40% compared to the same week last year!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                        1. The Dark Knight Rises
                        2. The Dark Knight Trilogy
                        3. *Finding Nemo
                        4. Men in Black 3
                        5. Brave
                        6. Marvel's The Avengers
                        7. The Amazing Spider-Man
                        8. The Odd Life of Timothy Green
                        9. The Expendables 2
                        10. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

                        Blu-ray Share:

Finding Nemo was a Blu-ray exclusive, so essentially 100% BD sales share.

Other than exclusives, The Dark Knight Trilogy box set had the highest BD sales share out of all the new releases this week. At 75.29%, this means more than 3 in 4 buyers of the box set bought the Blu-ray version. Poor old DVD!

The Dark Knight Rises didn't do as well, but still had a strong Blu-ray performance, with 68.41%.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green managed 24%, and Hope Springs only had 19%.

Finding Nemo was also available on Blu-ray 3D, and it had one of the strongest Blu-ray 3D performances so far for the sub-format. With a 47.89% BD3D sales share, it means that nearly half of those that purchased the film chose the 3D combo version.

Largely thanks to The Dark Knight movies, and the Blu-ray exclusivity of Finding Nemo, overall Blu-ray market share for the week was the second highest in 2012, only outdone by the week another superhero movie was released, The Avengers back in September.

                        DVD: $244.86 million
Blu-ray revenue was way up, while DVD revenue was way down, when comparing this week to a year ago. That's largely due to the differing releases, with The Help last year helping DVD much more than Blu-ray, countered by The Hangover II
and Cowboys & Aliens on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray sales increased by $31.75m (up 40.3%), while DVD sales decreased by $51.42m (down 21%) producing an overall loss of $19.67 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 24.34% to 36.36%.

                          Top 10:

DVD making a comeback this week compared to the last week, but Blu-ray revenue continued to hover near the yearly highs.

Ted was the best selling new release of the week, and doing very well to outsell The Dark Knight Rises, last week's number one, by almost twice as many copies on Blu-ray at least.

The Bourne Legacy had to settle for 3rd place, with Ice Age: Continental Drift further behind in 4th.

The continued strong performance of The Dark Knight Rises, and the new releases this week, helped to make this weeks the third best week of 2012 for Blu-ray revenue, incidentally all three weeks having $110 million in sales.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                          1. Ted
                          2. The Dark Knight Rises
                          3. The Bourne Legacy
                          4. Ice Age: Continental Drift
                          5. The Dark Knight Trilogy
                          6. *Finding Nemo
                          7. Brave
                          8. Marvel's The Avengers
                          9. Men in Black 3
                          10. The Amazing Spider-Man

                          Blu-ray Share:

The reason for the stronger DVD performance this week, compared to the last week, could be due to Ted's first week BD sales share being lower than that of last week's best selling title, The Dark Knight Rises. While TDKR amazed with a 68% market share, Ted had to settle for 48.85%, still a very respectable figure for a comedy.

The Bourne Legacy did better, at 59.44%, but it didn't sell as many copies as Ted so had a smaller effect on overall Blu-ray market share. Ice Age: Continental Drift was further back at 40.74%.

Only the latest Ice Age movie was available on Blu-ray 3D, but a 6.87% BD3D sales share can only be seen as a disappointment (as a comparison, the most recent similar release, Brave, managed a BD3D sales share of 11.57%, nearly 1 in 4 Blu-ray/combo copies vs 1 in 6 for Ice Age: Continental Drift).

As a result of all of this, Blu-ray market share dropped back a bit compared to last week, but still ended up above 30%.

                          Blu-ray: $89.22 million
                          DVD: $280.51 million
An argument could be made that, combined, the new releases this week were bigger releases than Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Kung Fu Panda 2, both new releases from the same week a year ago ($341m versus $492m for this week's triple), so you would expect total revenue to rise. But it actually dropped by more than 5%, led by losses to the DVD format.

Blu-ray sales increased by $20.79m (up 23.3%), while DVD sales decreased by $42.36m (down 15.1%) producing an overall loss of $21.57 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 24.13% to 31.60%.

                            Stats:

For the week ending 22nd December 2012, here are the stats:

                            Percentage of revenue:
                            Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.54% vs 72.46%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $115.67 million
DVD sales total spending: $304.39 million

                            Top 10:

A couple of new releases this week, but it was the recent releases from weeks past that dominated the sales charts for the week ending 22nd December.

Ted and The Dark Knight Rises still led the charts, and newcomers Pitch Perfect, Total Recall (2012) could only get as high as 3rd and 4th respectively.

Three more releases were in the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, but none made the Blu-ray top 10. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days managed 8th on the combined charts, but only 16th on the Blu-ray only charts. Trouble With the Curve was 11th and 15th on the respective charts, and Resident Evil: Retribution did especially disappointingly at 19th and 13th. The last Resident Evil managed to get 2nd place during the week it was released, and it was only behind the hugely popular Inception that week.

But despite the lackluster list of new releases, Blu-ray did its best weekly business since, well, forever. At more than $115 million, this is the best week Blu-ray has ever had, beating the previous record, exactly a year ago, by a small 1.9% rise. While that rise may seem small (revenue is very much dependent on releases, and so it's hard to make a completely fair comparison), this is the 4th time in 2012 that weekly Blu-ray revenue has risen above $100 million, compared to just a single time (this time last year) in 2011 - that's something worth taking into account.

DVD revenue was also the strongest it has been this year due to strong demand during the holidays, but was still down some 17% from the same time last year.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                            1. Ted
                            2. The Dark Knight Rises
                            3. Pitch Perfect
                            4. Total Recall (2012)
                            5. Ice Age: Continental Drift
                            6. Brave
                            7. The Bourne Legacy
                            8. Marvel's The Avengers
                            9. The Dark Knight Trilogy
                            10. *Finding Nemo

                            Blu-ray Share:

Total Recall (2012) was actually the best performing title in terms of BD sales share, with 64.82% of all disc sales belonging to Blu-ray.

Despite poor sales, Resident Evil: Retribution was the next best in terms of BD sales share, with 55.77%. It was also available on BD3D, with 11% of all disc sales being the 3D version. This was the only new 3D release in the top 20 for this week.

Trouble With the Curve, Pitch Perfect and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days all did less well on Blu-ray, with sales shares of 34%, 33% and 23% respectively.

Due to higher than normal DVD sales due to holiday shopping, overall Blu-ray market share actually dropped below 30% again, but was up year-on-year by nearly 4%.

                              Top 10:

No new releases this week, at all, in the top 20 of either the Blu-ray or the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, which isn't all that surprising for a week that covers the post Christmas period. However, Blu-ray and DVD sales remained strong.

The top sales lists was largely made up of hits from recent weeks, so no surprises there. What might seem surprising was the rise in revenue compared to the "same" week last year, but due to the 2012 week including 2 important sales days prior to Christmas (23rd and 24th), while the "same" week in 2011 spanned the much quieter 25th to the 31st, the near 36% rise in total disc revenue can be almost entirely discounted due to this factor (although Blu-ray revenue would seem to have risen anyway, having risen 53.6% compared to DVD's near 30%).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                              1. The Dark Knight Rises
                              2. Ted
                              3. *Finding Nemo
                              4. Pitch Perfect
                              5. Resident Evil: Retribution
                              6. Brave
                              7. Total Recall (2012)
                              8. The Bourne Legacy
                              9. Ice Age: Continental Drift
                              10. Marvel's The Avengers

                              Blu-ray Share:

With no new releases, there's hardly anything to talk about here. The overall Blu-ray market share of 28.45% is good, but not spectacular, but that's to be expected with more heavy DVD buying at this time of the year due to heavier discounting.

                                Top 10:

Still very quiet following the end of the busy holiday shopping season, and so Blu-ray revenue and market share both retreated compared to recent highs.

Looper was the best selling new release of the week, which only saw one other new release, which failed to make the top 10, Justified: The Complete Third Season. Looper easily outsold everything else by a big margin and finished on top, while the latest season of Justified on Blu-ray finished 11th on the Blu-ray sales charts.

Otherwise, the top 10 chart has a very familiar look to recent week's.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                                1. Looper
                                2. The Dark Knight Rises
                                3. Ted
                                4. Total Recall (2012)
                                5. Pitch Perfect
                                6. Resident Evil: Retribution
                                7. Ice Age: Continental Drift
                                8. The Bourne Legacy
                                9. *Finding Nemo
                                10. Men in Black 3

                                Blu-ray Share:

Looper managed to have a Blu-ray sales share of just over 50%, at 50.28% to be exact, meaning the Blu-ray and combo versions outsold the DVD only editions, albeit only by a small margin.

Season 3 of Justified's 22% BD sales share was the main reason why it didn't sell higher on the Blu-ray only charts, despite finishing a high-ish 7th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts.

No new Blu-ray 3D releases for this week.
