Well then i guess you have (a)dsl. The reason why your most probably recieving such bad speeds is because youre too far from a main service office which has the switches for your internet connection. Here in quebec, when someone's 10km (~3 miles) from the one of the main offices, the speed gets reduced quite significantly. However with dsl, its your line, you don't share it with anybody. With cable on the other hand, if youre on a street where lots of other people have it and are using it at the same time, you can also notice a difference.

But if you say youre not really in a crowded area, i would indeed switch

Yes, the fact that many people in my area have high speed cable scares me My friends get very good speeds, but they don't live in the same area.

However, I'm thinking of giving cable a try (as soon as I throw this PC out the window and replace it with a new one).

i have read articles that prove that cable is usually faster than DSL, and has less down time than DSL. I say go for it!

so Batman, have you gotten cable yet? if you have'nt yet, go to www.bandwidthplace.com and do the speed test, and then get cable and compare results. I did it and there was a huge difference, 40kbs to 3.5Mbs!

I have a DSL line that will run up to 6mbps sometimes and I always can get good downloads from Kazaa but on eMule it is very slow. Usually not getting over 17kbps. Anyone got an explaination?

maybe you didn't hook up with the best server. try sorting the server list by the ping, and connect with the one that has the most.

Actually, emule is open source so it doesnt matter which server you connect to, as long as you have a lot in your server list. The only thing the server does matter for is searching for files, as it searches only the server you're connected to.

As for the ping, you should mean connect to the one that has the lowest amount of ping...

                        (Maybe you meant most users)

                          about emule

One of the biggest problems I faced with edonkey was that download rate would be determined by the upload rate (download rate was 3 times the upload rate). However, for adsl users such as me uploads are nearly impossible. Does EMULE have the same restriction as EDONKEY?

Well, i think adsl has at least a 10 kb/s upstream...

Therefore, once you upload at 10, youre free to set your download speed to whatever you like - with no restrictions.

Since you were using edonkey though, you get far worse downloads there.

I am new (ish) to emule, so I don't really know the ropes. From what I have been hearing about all of your ISP's mine sounds pretty good. unlimited bandwidth... No cap... superfast download and uploads (I have gotten in Kazaa 215kbs in an upload before, and 240kbs in a download)... Cheap at $30 USD... A new modem that looks cool, the Toshiba pcx 2200...

                              I guess I am lucky

My ISP sucks. I spent 1 month downloading a movie on Kazaa. The best I got was a mere 30 kbps and that was only for a short time. I usually get between 2-7 kbps.
