@ Miles ... looks like you need to add it to your "Honey Do List"!
    G!
it does cost little more but you save all the headache, sorting ... if I want to burn out copy just use flick then burn them

    500 GB = 145 $ ( after tax) / 400 + movie ( about 700 mb to 1400 mb)

for disc you have disc+ case about .35

145/.35 = 414 movie + case so they come out about even

assuming they are converted from avi to dvd, but if you use dvd's to back them up as avi's and put 4(on average) avi's to each dvd, your backup will
only cost 1/4 as much to store

I trust dvd's more than hard drives,

I think if the hard drive is just used to back up video, then disconnected the drive. I have my drive in a usb case. The only time I use it when I load movies to it or to watch a movie.

I have mucho HDD storage space but still burn just about everything to DVD also and delete from the HDDS as necessary when space is needed. Out with the old and in with the new.

@jm1647, I do the exact same process, in with the new out with the old. By the way Andy Reid went to the same high school me. @BR7, Why not use DVDProfiler in Number mode to keep your collection organized. That's what I'm planning to do just haven't found the time to make the switch yet. I got the 800 capacity one (couldn't find a pic though), I'll set up the case just like it is in DVDProfiler, I'll be able to find any dvd without a hitch. http://www.supermediastore.com/cd-dv...-capacity.html If you want to keep them in slim jewel cases then put a label on each one with a number.

Yeah burning them to DVD also IMO is the way to go. Once you have a HDD go ya get kinda leary about losing stuff.

Yeah, I've lost my share of movies, the ones I'd had stored on the OS drive. I still have some drives that were used for storage only, that were full of movies. I think I'll put a couple of them in the new computer I'm building.

I keep going back & forth on this one, I can't seem to settle on the *best* way... For now I am using double dvd cases, standard 14mm size & storing the original & backup in the same case.

I am starting to lean towards NighTran's method, though, keep them all on the HD...

I have a lot of storage space, & for me it is just easiest to backup as ISO, although I know there are better ways to do it & compress it way down, such as Divx. I'm too lazy to get real involved & do extra encoding tho...

Also, I don't need to put them all on the HD, since some we rarely watch over & over again, but I am finding tv series/cartoons, get the most play, such as..

*The Simpsons: we have all the seasons
                        *Futurama: same as above
                        *Beast Wars: same as above
                        *Reboot: same as above
                        *Peter Gunn: same as above
                        *Rockford Files: same as above
                        *A-Team: same as above

                        And several others...

As you can see, that would be a whole pile of discs right there, & that isn't even counting movies to be backed up.....

                          Katz,

So backed up ISO's how do you play them directly on TV? Or do you have do a Temp burn and watch it?

                          G!

I have a TV out jack on my ATI vid card, goes to tv input, or in my case a multi-port switch that I have game units/dvd player/vcr/etc. connected to.

I did it a long time ago it worked ok, but since my pc is in another room I have to run back & forth to control things, pause, etc. It is a minor hassle, but as I mentioned, I may consider doing it this way for all my dvds in the future...

my comp is hook straight to TV so I can play either avi file or iso, my temp file save in internal my good movie save on external, if I want to play movie from external tranfer then turn off the external so I dont use them at all, just keep the files
