A lot of programs are better than Norton's. A better question to ask the experts is which program has a smaller usage of RAM. My Norton's internet security takes over 300MB of RAM ALL the time. It starts automatically at start up and is impossible to turn off without removing it completely.
I have used McAfee and Norton with problems so I quit.
AVG Free has been great, low key, and free updates. Does great with no problems. I use it on all 3 computers in my house. I also use spybot with success.

What no rootkit revealer???
When I scan I use multiple programs too. Never too much because what one misses another will find. Not all programs can be up to date so through a mixture, you can almost catch all!
I'm like codajohn, I have Ad-aware, Norton, Spybot, and CleanMyPC Registry. But this is because I work from home. I take orders over the phone and people pay by credit cards. I don't run games or any extra programs on it, so it keeps the PC fast. No one calling to order wants to wait for your screen to load!
