My collection of Japanese Maple Acer plants. They were all grown from tiny plants costing a few pounds each and would now cost well over £100 each now.
There is also a Robin bird net behind the biggest one with three or four babies in it. It's nice watching the two Robin parents feeding them. Unfortunately a photo is really hard to do due to the position of the nest.
Been to a few nurseries with just the japenese maples, amazing horticulture.
Got a lesson one time in pruning from a friend that had taken classes from
a gardner from japan. There are 2 local lace leaf umbrella specimens, one at an older restaurant, another at a subdivision, the latter has been neglected
and has gotten malformed. The owners don't know how rare or how long they take to form right from the graft. Some night I might have to liberate that tree. It's worth about 2K, the restaurant one about 10K.
Both are about the same age, one of my clients selected the neglected tree after a 2hour drive and paid
700$ 20 years ago for it. The villa has changed hands 3 times since.
Those umbrella specimens are grafted on 10-20 year trunks with a cutting from an old trees lower branches where the apical meristem has gone dormant
and then held and shapped for ~10 years, and usually sell for 2 grand and up.
that picture is probably a 20-30 year old tree and only 8-10 ft high
it's an art, I got the honor of prunning some for a friend/client once, took 4 hours to snip 5-6 trees(2-3K total worth) the lady had gotten the nurseryman to dig them out of his own yard.
her husband the surgeon came home and said I can't tell what he did, she said exactly!
After doing some japanese black pines for my guru, I found a cull from kmart for 5$, planted in a raised bed on the side of a steep bank facing east, after 3-4 years transplanted behind a 6 ft high retaining wall
at the corner of my new house. 2 years later damn thing was 14 feet high and I had it in perfect shape.
