Gordian Knot file size issue

I have been trying to encode to a size of 1cd and the end result is constantly below what I want.
I have tried disabling bi-directional encoding and upping the resolution as posted but to no avail. It's getting b**&(y frustrating.
My last attempt was with the bitrate set to 1100 and the finished AVI size was just over 593mb with 128 mp3 sound.
Any ideas what to try now???
I have GK updated to version .26
Also, one question: what is the encoding solution; field deinterlace or none?? I tried fast deinterlace on a 16:9 PAL movie and is encoded abysmally so I have not tried it on any movie again.

gk 0.26b and fast de-interlace will fail due to a known bug!

in addition to using a high res like 704 x XXX you could go for SHARP bicubic resizing

If you up the bitrate and the filesize stays the same then you have hit the max quality you can achieve. Disabling all mpeg4 options and increasing the resolution is about all you can do. One final question though - how is the quality? If it looks great, don't worry about the filesize. Use higher quality sound or put some extras on the cd.

The quality is only reasonable. There are intermittent black lines across the screen which I assume are to do with interlacing, hence my question on deinterlacing.
Also, in black parts of the screen eg. night sky, dark clothes there is a certain amount of green small squares (macro-blocks??) -sorry not sure about some of the terminology.

I need to qualify that statement; on a PC monitor the quality is good. However, on a 4:3 PAL 50hz TV that is where the problem lies.
Any ideas or links I can go to to work out this issue????
