I have to agree with you all. BURN free BURN forever.......
How can they justify that we are ripping off the system more like we are the ones being ripped off with all their high rediculous prices they want for movies. Why you think we d/l them for free?
I believe they bring out the hardware/software/materials then why the hell not have free rain to do whatever you please!!

They bring out a new car you use it, it aint illegal. But soon as they make a rule you cannot go over the speed limit you have to abide by that. Thats &%$^#(*ed!!!!! If you dont want people to speed dont make a car go over the bloody limit.

You cannot have the best of both worlds. If software/hardware etc are bought out then you should be able to use it I feel.......

What I'm reading here is, it's ok to pirate, because the movies/music is crap anyway, or those downloading wouldn't have bought it anyway.

      on the first:

If it's crap, why do you want to spend a couple of hours downloading ripping etc and a further couple of hours watching listening? Is your life so dull and uneventful that you can waste say, 2 hrs downloading, 2 hrs watching crap, that's four hours, half a working day, 1/4 of your waking day (assuming you spend 8 sleeping) what a sad life.

On the second point, if they couldn't download it and they wanted to see the film or hear the cd then they would buy it.

real reason, piracy happens because it can, we are guilty of the same greed the corporations are, we want something for nothing.

      On the record companies:

Most of their money is invested in big selling established artists, new music strugles to get through, p2p etc is a great way for these artists to get heard. but how many of us search for unheard of or unsigned bands?

personlay I'd be willing to pay up to $10 for a cd if I liked the band. I believe the band should revieve $5 they are the creative force behind the music afterall, the rest could be spent on promotion etc.

So here's a solution, download the album, if you like it buy it, if you fell record companies are ripping you off, send the band a payment for their music, $5 would be fair for a cd.

That way you get to keep the moral high ground and support new music.

on another note, the record companies could be sensible and allow us to download an entire album for $5, we would be cutting out distribution and packaging costs, more artists would be heard and more music sold, everybody would be happy.

"So here's a solution, download the album, if you like it buy it"

Thats exactly what i do, even if the album is mediocre - but ONLY to bands that deserve the money (i.e punk bands). They dont make music for the money because theyre not mainstream anyway, which is why they deserve my cash.

You're so full of crap on the "send $5 to the band" bit it's laughable. Do you realize how much money goes into making Britney Spears (or fill in any of the other current "talent" out there selling mad LPs) sound like she actually has the ability to sing well?

Just listen to Gwen Stephany (spelling prolly wrong) from No Doubt sing live, and you'll understand why these "artists" don't mind that the record companies get the majority of the money from their record sales - how else could they sell an album with her natural voice on it?

Oh, wait...few people in the CD buying market have much taste, or a sense of pitch / ability to detect musical talent anyway...

If I go to the store to buy an ice-cream cone I can get one for just over a buck. If I go to Laura Secord I can get a really gooood ice-cream cone for at least twice as much. But I do have the option.

What we have here is the option to view one really expensive movie that was made for the sole purpose of making really big money, along with the option to buy really expensive junk food, and all we have to do is watch half an hour of commercials (gripe: one of which has the audacity to warn me not to pirate after I have just paid the damn $14 to be condescended to). Or we could just stay home and get the cheaper version.

Laws are made for the good of society. If they outlive their usefulness they no longer help keep society good and the rule eventually gets changed. For extreme example, it used to be illegal to paint the rungs of a ladder. But they don’t make little spindly wooden rungs anymore and it’s not so easy to slip off anymore, so that law no longer has a part in making society a better place. If millions of people decided they really wanted spindly ladders with painted rungs (despite the danger of slipping off in the rain and breaking their necks) then there really wouldn’t be anything government could do about it. There wouldn’t be enough prisons (extreme) or enough court space (minor) to try all the cases and the whole legal system would grind to a halt. But people are often run by fear without even realizing it and simply do what is expected of them without bothering to ask who is doing the asking.

Maybe the people are starting to take a stand against paying twice the amount for what usually ends up being a disappointment when they can now view it instead in the comfort of their homes, without the commercials, and with whatever food they wish. Hmm. Doesn’t sound like a dastardly crime to me.

Bottom line is the option to download is here and it ain’t gonna go away anytime soon.
If majority says we want to download movies, we refuse to make you filthy rich for it, and the law still insists it is illegal, we no longer have rule for the good of society, we have rule for the good of pocket-books, and that is immoral and wrong. It’s also no longer democracy. The consequences may be that people have to stop making sensational, exploding movies. Maybe we’ll have to settle for $1 ice cream after all.

i think that unless you live someone elses life you have no room to judge someone just because you think your government gives you the right to...what about the little disabled 17yr old boy or girl with no legs or whatever that has no money and there single parent mom works all day and leaves them home to do nothin...should they be forced to stare at a wall just because they cant get media for free? theres probably at least a million special cases like that but i guess its better that business get all the money so we can have their trickle down whatevers

A lot of so called "pirates" are "pirates" of opportunity. What I like to do, if I hear a song I like, I download that song. For me, it's an impulse. However, it's not an impulsive thing for me to do to go to the store and lay out 20$ for a full CD based on 1 song that I liked. Plus, soon I get tired of that song, and I delete it. If I had actually bought the CD, I spent money on something I realized I didn't actually like.

                      Grant,

Full of crap eh, so your excuse for pirating is that some artists are crap and use studio technology to enhance their abilities?

Do you actually download songs by artists you don't like?

If you do like the material you download what's wrong with paying for it.

The crap idea you complained about is being used quite successfully in europe by many independant artists, see not every musician is a brit spears, many good artists cannot get signed because record companies don't take chances on new artists, they produce their own material, put it on line for you to download and heh if you like it pay a small fee for it.

if you object to that idea, then simply you are unwilling to pay for music, and all your reasoning is just crap, your a thief hiding behind excuses that's all.

Just a quick note, Although the Digital Millennium Act has changed it, Copyright law states CLEARLY “copying of copyrighted material…for profit is strictly prohibited” however, that items “…may be copied for personal use, … (or) freely distributed without profit, …with reasonable accommodation” Copyright law strictly allows the FREE distribution of work, hand to hand, over the phone line, on a disk, in a box, with a side of Green Eggs and Ham, any way you like. Be minded the DMA has changed that, 37 states have already filed suit for a repeal of the law, as being unconstitutional. As a recording artist, having had three bands over the last ten years, my band has released and sold more than 3000 records, at $2.00 each. That’s $1.50 profit for each one. And we GIVE OUR MUSIC AWAY, FREE on different file sharing networks, and bit torrent servers. We sell music, just by giving it away.
If we went to a record company, we’d see less than 50C per disk. And they wouldn’t let us put it on Kazza. And others.

                            what an excellent point!

so, it's the overpaid actors, and the overpaid directors, plus the overpaid editors that prompt illegal downloading/distribution...worth looking into.

so...if everyone was paid the same, fair rate, and actors weren't making gazillions for movies, would people THEN purchase merchandise and the like...? probably not. but i bet it would defintely reduce the amount of piracy out there...

                              Hello

                              Hi everyone,
New member, My father inlaw got me a Memorex double layer 16x RW for Xmas. I had several HD'S crash on me so I'm guessing that's why he got it. Anyway, I was being a torrent HOG and came across the Star Wars trillogy ORIGINAL LD rip. I was like well OK I here Lucas is never releasing the Orginals I might as well grab them. (I'm a SW fanboy)
Well I did, and boy did I have to learn about mounting, ISO files, decrypting, tweaking. I mean this is not free in any way to get what you want it is work. After three coasters I got 3 great films I am truly happy with. I am hooked and if I know I won't be able to get the original of anything ever again, I will turn to the wonderful internet, along with my burner and it will be forever safe. Then I'll eat one of these rainbow trip things. Thanx Mr.Lucas the films you got help on were the best, your modified crap ****ing Sucks ass!

                                A DRM update

I will completely ignore the last post.
While I recognize that this post is long ago dead, and has not been bumped, I thought it worthy of a follow-up to my last post. a few weeks ago the international world Court made a ruling on an extensive DRM case. In their ruling they have for the first time acted to protect the consumer's rights; finding that current DRM and the US DMCA violate international copyright standards. The ruling will essentially criminalize all DRM protection methods and will affect all of the European Union and many countries in Asia. (this ruling does not affect DVDs or future DVD related video anti-duplication use, but suggest that circumvention technology be made freely available)
The EU board of international commerce met quickly thereafter and feverishly worked to pass a new law related to this latest ruling. While this new EU law is not retroactive, and will not go into it for almost another year, when it does take effect it will nearly completely ban all DRM protected media.
This latest international ruling and the many laws that were enacted shortly thereafter has been completely ignored by the US media which is controlled by the same anti-consumer corporate giants that came up with the DRM formats in the first place.
at this point it has been suggested that those who live or travel frequently in Europe and Asia find alternatives to Microsoft WMA and Apple iPod for grants. suggestions point to services such as Emusic.com or allofMP3.com as options DRM free music downloads.
I guess this means that were in the first stages of winning this war against the corporate Devils of the US.
