Both DVD-R and DVD+R have about 80% compatibility with existing DVD players (standalone or ROM variety).

I personally don't think one format is better than the other in terms of compatibility, and most independent analysis shows this.

In fact, I think the 80% is probably too high, it's probably 60% or something.
