Problems with my USB 2.0 Sony DRX-710UL

Hello, This was probably answered on here already but I am not sure how explain my problem to look for the answer, mabey you can point me to some threads/links or just answer my question. I have an external USB 2.0 DVD writer and I am trying to burn different types of dvds and it writes at .4x/500kb/s on both - and + discs. I am thinking it is because it is an external writer and it might not be as fast as an IDE but I really want to know how I can solve this problem. This writer can burn 8x - 16x so there is no reason it should be performing this lousy. Any help would be great!

Sure it's connected to a USB 2.0 channel and not a USB 1.1 channel?

Are your discs labeled for higher speed than 4x?

No and Yes. I have a laptop so I have assumed that it came preloaded with USB 2.0 drivers. You think that may be the problem?

            "4x/500kb/s on both"

Sounds more as you are burning at 0.5X...

Where did you find that number?

Your firmware is rather old - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1917

So you think there is anything else that could be causing this, I will check my USB drivers and upgrade my firmware.

Have you burned anything before this one - do you one if the end result is good?

USB is not my strong side - I have a USB 2.0 printer - can't even connect it to my own 2.0 USB PC connector...

I have burned many other dvd's before and have always had the same problem. I am just kinda nervous about upgrading my firmware since I have ruined a motherboard and a router while upgrading firmware.

Oh okay, I have done all the other steps I beleive, Defragged both drives, checked power, gotten all updates as far drivers/software goes.

                            Problems with getting USB2 running
Even the Sony website did not support this device yet (August 3, 2004)
I finally went into device manager, right clicked on usb devices, selected properties, and did a search for updated drivers. The search found and installed the appropriate drivers. These can be found on windows service pack 1 but I have no idea why it did not automatically install them for me.

I don't know if my computer have USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? Is the external DVD burners compatiable with USB 1.1?

A: Yes it is comptiable with USB 1.1. However you will be only able to burn CD and read CD / DVD, you can not burn DVD because the speed is too slow. To check if your USB port is USB 2.0 or standard USB 1.1, go to "Control Panel" --> "Device Manager" --> "Universal Serial Bus Controller" to see if you have "USB 2.0 Root Hub" listed or "Enhanced Universal Serial Bus Controller" thereunder.
