Burning Copies of Copies

Greetings, I have searched through the forums and have not found a solution to my issue. If I missed it, please direct me to the proper place.

I am trying to burn copies of copies but running into some difficulty.

My hardware is as follows:

Emprex Dual Layer 16X DVD +/- RW/R
LG 16X DVD ROM

Athlon XP 2800+
1024 MB DDR400
and ample ammounts of free HDD room

I have a number of DVD copies that I am trying to make an extra copy of...but I am having issues doing so.

I have tried many different ways, direct disc copy from Nero (I have actually hosed discs doing this), using DVD Shrink to save to hard drive and copy, and using DVD Decrypter to copy to hdd. All the programs just stop reading the disc (usually about 30% - 60% through, and yes at different spots on the same disc depending on the program), and I am forced to abort the operation. I am usually given an I/O Error reading from the drive.

Since my LG DVD-ROM is a little older, it does not read burned discs...so I can't try it on another drive. I do not however have any problems playing the disc on either my home DVD Player or my PS2.

This does not happen with all discs, only a handful, I can not find the correlation between the discs.

If you would like a list of the movies this has happened with, please let me know.

The IO error indicates a bad source disk.

DVD Decrypter is probably mosr reliable method.

Don't ever try on the fly copying. It is just a coaster waiting to happen.

I was thinking that it was a bad source disk, but why would it play perfectly on my DVD Player and my PS2? That's what get's to me.

That...and the fact that it get's to different points in the DVD before it fails reading it.

The one I am currently trying get's to 44% - 49% in DVD Shrink and 32% - 36% in DVD Decrypter. :|

But, you say "I am able to watch the DVD fine in my DVD player." That is irrelvant, as drives and players operate on different programming. Drives are logical, players can interpret digital signals and are not choked by bad data.

A player will often find its way past a bad sector or two, sometimes without you noticing anything in the video (you may notice some audio problems because the audio buffer is so small). A burner wants every sector just right.

TY for the info...but I have already tried both the solutions.

I thought about that issue with the DVD Player being different from my burner or my DVD ROM, but did not put 2+2 together at the moment.

I was hoping that this was a common problem that people have been facing, and that there might be a fix or work-around out there for it.

I guess I was wrong. :|

Are they physically damaged, like scratches? Even the tiniest of scratch can give off an error.

Do they have finger prints, etc. on them?

No scratches or finger prints on them at all. It's a completely random error...only happens with some discs.

I have tried it with freshly burned DVD's and received the same errors (just not on all discs)! :?

Your not by any change running ANYDVD or DVD43 in the background are you ?

No, I tried with DVD43 in the background, and without it in the background. I do not have ANYDVD installed.

The only thing running in the background is NAV (and I tried both with and without that running as well).

I would uninstall DVD43, and try again.

If your OS is XP, simply do a "System Restore" back to a time when things were working properly.

They have really never been working properly for me with copying copies. So I don't think the restore will help. It has been an intermitten issue since the beginning. :|

I will uninstall DVD43 and try, and report back on what happens.

Are you able to play any of the "problem" dvds from your PC using PowerDVD or other SW player? If so then you should be able to just open "My Computer" go to the drive and drag the dvd to a folder on your desktop. Once on the desktop then just use Nero Burning Rom to make another copy.

my method (which has never failed me), is to rip/backup the copy i made to the hdd only. if that fails, then you can assume that it was a bad burn, then you can narrow it down to the blank media being inferior (not holding data well), compatibility problem between burner & blanks, or something simple as burning at a lower speed (try 2x or 4x)

I am not able to play them with PowerDVD or WinDVD.

I am really starting to think that they are just bad burns. This is an issue that I have faced since I started burning DVD's. I gave up after about the first 4 or so that would not work (was about 4 out of 8 or 9 that I tried to copy a second time). I am going through some of the newer burns that I have, and I am not having any problems ripping them to the hard drive and burning again, or burning from an *.ISO in DVD Decrypter.

I don't know what I did wrong when I first started copying movies...but apperently it was something.
