    Someone Help! Illegal Disk??Burn Failure

I recently bought a Memorex DVD+/-RW Dual Layer External Drive.Been trying to figgure it out for a couple weeks now.I've been using Dvd Shrink 3.2.I initially tried the Nero 6 that came with my burner and my operating system is windows XP.Nothing was working.I tried burning thru both programs(shrink and nero even dvd decrypter) and kept coming up with the same result:It starts writing lead in then stops and says burn failure Illegal Disk.So i switched to an older version of Nero my buddy had and low and behold it Worked! But after that success every attempt after keeps resulting in burn failures :Illegal disk.I've been using Memorex-R 4.7's.I've been browsing the forums and have read how people say memorex disks suck and all but i'm going absolutely crazy over the fact i can't burn a damn thing. Can anyone help me!!???

    Thanx,
    LD!

well i use those discs and i say they rock, never had a bad burn out of em. but i also use a lite-on internal writer. what i really think will make a difference is to try a really good disc like sony or verbatim at the slowest speed possible after you've updated the firmware and nero (if you use it)

I suggest you uninstall Nero, then run their Clean Tool http://www.nero.com/us/General_Clean_Tool.html

Then Reinstall Nero 6 and finally update it to v6.6
Nero Upgrade Center - Comparez nos produits Nero ! Mise à niveau vers la dernière version ✓ Aperçu de tous les produits Nero ✓ Caractéristiques ►Mise à niveau maintenant !

Then check your DMA settings http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=44808

If you still have problems burning, attach your NeroHistory.log file - found in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero to your reply.

          LD:

The "illegal disc" error can be a tricky one to pin down, especially if it is happening with every disc, and always happens at the same step of the process.

I had a friend who struggled with this for the first three weeks with a new burner (it happened to be a Lite-On), and his symptoms were identical to yours. We tried the best media (Taiyo Yudens, direct from Rima.com; Verbatims, two speeds; Ritek GO5s, andf then GO4s. We played with burning speeds. Played with ASPI layers. Checked DMA Mode. Both Nero Burning Rom and DVDDecrypter yielded the same results, (and Nero gave this both with and without DVDShrink) -- and the programs always gave this error almost instantly after they had written the initial "lead-in" and as they began the actual burn.

He read on one of these forums that this was sometimes caused by having both Nero and Roxio software installed (even if Roxio is not running in any way, shape or form at the time). Even if Nero is not running, and you are burning with DVDDecrypter. Nero does have an advisory to uninstall Roxio in their tech support FAQs. Roxio has the same advice, (only they suggest uninstalling Nero, naturally). Yet, there are thousands of people who have both running with no conflicts (including me, at work).

Still, he was desperate, so he tried it. He unistalled Roxio. Voila! His last "illegal disc" error was prior to that, and that was seven months ago, and more than 170 burns ago... It worked.

Just thought I would mention it, in case you have both programs installed.

And, yes, I know there are other things that can cause the "illegal disc" errors -- including bad media, older firmware, ASPI layer problems, DMA mode disabled, etc. However, I noticed that your error message was appearing at precisely the same instant that his was, so I thought I would suggest it.

Thanks for the info Bruce, I've been trying to verify the conflicts between Roxio and Nero see this http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...008#post297008

It's my current belief that alot of people have both software packages/drivers installed without problem, and if there is a conflict uninstalling and reisntalling Nero (so that it's drivers are 'on top') seems to resolve it (at least as far as burning with Nero goes

                    burn at 2x or 4x.
Yeah, im not to familiar with the process.I was worried that if i downloaded and installed a firmware i would seriously f@ck something up and do the wrong thing.I'm gonna try burning at 4x or less.then an update. Thanks again for the suggestions and all the help.I shall return momentarily.

Ok, so i went ahead and got the v.JWS6 firmware and installed it, I then went and updated my Nero to the 6.6 and Biggity Bam!No more illegal disk failure! The disk goes ahead and burns, but then it only plays for about ten minutes and the scene selection features freeze up.I tried popping it into different DVD players, no go.I'm gonna give it another shot.

Taelon, as far as the Roxio thing. I can't find it!I search my system for it and all that comes up is logs of my installation and uninstall of the program from december 2003.

Not to mention it kinda sucks that right now my internal DVD-Rom isn't reading DVD's.I'm using my burner to read the disk then i have to do folder hopping to decrypt, shrink then burn.complete pain in the ass.

LD - that's the way most people do it. They decrypt to hard drive, shrink and burn.
