I tried to update the drive firmwares and it gave me message at the end that the firmware has been successfully updated. I rebooted my sysyem and now I neither can see the ROM Drive in "My Computer" & in "Device Manager" nor can eject it. It's light is also not glowing. In short it is simply not regognising the ROM Drive. I was looking for HL-DT-ST GCC-4243N driver but couldn't find. How I can solve this problem? I restored my system, but still can not see my drive in "My Computer" or in "Device Manager".

Hi Sadie, I'm afraid if you downloaded and installed the firmware from here that would be the problem, that firmware is only for DELL computers and probably won't work in your Toshiba.

I installed the one which has 4243N firmwares and it reset the drive firmware and is no more recognising my drive. I had OS on my HD & thought reinstalling it will solve my problem, but no, I was wrong. I tried to boot thru' external dvd burner, but I simply can not do that. Today evening, I will try this link or otherwise, I'll have to boot thru' USB drive with 98SE DOS Boot and it'll recognise my drive, If u've any suggestions, pls let me know. Since I reinstalled my OS & did not load all drivers, I was unable to connect to internet during the weekend.

Strange I was sure I posted a follow-up to this yesterday... oh well.

sadie1, as I mentioned that firmware was for DELL only, I've tried to locate the original firmware for your burner but can't find it on the net. If you were able to make a backup of the original firmware I would recommend re-flashing with it. If you don't have the original, you can get the Region Free version from here http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GCC4243N

Please note that this package has OEM firmware DELL, Toshiba, Acer and HP/Compaq. For your Toshiba you will want to use the T101AUTO.EXE file

It ain't only the firmware, maybe the flakey media is rare(nowdays),
                it's a laptop with 400megs in use.

I tried the T101AUTO.EXE, doen't work. Somehow I could open the cd tray but then after changing the boot sequence to cd doesn't work. I can not boot thru, the cd. What I should do?

sadie, Boot into windows in SAFE mode (F8) and open device manager, remove every cd drive listed. Then reboot again and let windows find the cd drive. Once windows finds it, put a CD in and see if you can read it. Then you can try again to boot from the cd.

I can see the drive only in BIOS and not in Windows. I tried to boot it thru' 98Boot usb key & the drive was installed in DOS. While I was in DOS, I was able to open cd tray, I could read the cd in the tray but don't know the next step. I tried to open setup.exe file in the loaded cd, but that was ISO image & wasn't able to open.

Ok if you can read a disk in DOS that's a good start. Now I'm not sure I understand your current situation, do you still have XP on your harddrive? Why are you booting up with 98 now?

I read on bootdisk.com that if I boot thru' 98boot disk, it loads the rom drive. That what I did. I've xp on my HD but it is ISO image. I can extract it, I have ISO magic installed. Shall I do this?
