When I boot thru' HD, my laptop recognizes the drive, it works fine. I can read the containts on CD thru' DOS but windows doesn't recognize cdrom. Can I load 98se cd on my drive and execute setup.exe and install 98 OS. Once it is done, I'll reinstall the XP. I tried to do this with XP cd but that is an ISO file and can not be executed the setup file like 98se.

Sadie it sounds like you are going in circles. If I understand you correctly the drive works in DOS and it works in 98SE, but XP doesn't see the drive.

You can download XP setup boot disks from this page at microsoft Please select the right one for XP Home or Professional and if you have ServicePack1 or ServicePack2.

This will create a XP startup disk that should recognize your CD.

But I don't have floppy bay in my laptop, neither another computer where I can use my usb key 6 times to make 6 bootable usb's. If I install 98se thru' DOS and then XP, will it work? My XP cd is bootable, so if it recognizes the drive, there shouldn't be any problem booting to xp thru' cd.

                  Could be. Any suggestions?
Actually I installed XP yesterday by extracting the XP ISO file and executing the setup.exe file thru' HD. Now, 98se is only archieve file and I think, in DOS, I'll be able to read the setup.exe file on 98se cd. So, I'll be executing it from cdrom drive & not from HD. I think, I can burn XP's exatracted files to cd and then also I can try that. I'll not have to install 98se & then xp. Give me any suggestions. I've very little knoledge regarding all these things.

This sounds like a good thing to try. If so, then you should be able to run the XP setup directly.

Hope so. I'm going to try it this evening. I created the Xp bootable cd thru' nero, but windows doesn't recognize my cdrom, so I can not boot that way. If I boot thru' HD, I can access cdrom thru' DOS and from there I can execute the setup.exe file of Xp. That's what I'll be trying this evening. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What exactly happens when you try to boot to the cd?

I go into bios and tell it to boot to cd, load cd, bios posts and asks me if I want to boot to cd,
                          press any key, etc.

When I change the boot sequence & try to boot thru' cdrom, cd spins for few seconds, then stops and computer starts normally. It doesn't ask me anything.

For the time it took to read this thread, I could have purchased a new CD-rom for $15.00 at a local computer store, installed it into my machine and installed WinXP.

                              Well, for the most part.

Before buying external dvd drive, I searched a lot, but couldn't get any deal for cheap. Now as I already have got external drive, actually faulty drive doesn't stop my working. By doing these trial and error things, I'm learning new things. I already have mentioned that I have very little knoledge @ all these things. Moreover, it is still under warranty, if I couldn't fix, I'll simply send it back to company.
