Another problem - Lost 8x burn speed

I posted yesterday about Nero and the fact it will not burn a 2 gig file. I just noticed that I cannot burn over 2.4x now. It used to burn at 8x.

Is there software that will check the drive to see what is goig on?

what is the X speed of the media you are using?

Nero a lot of times will burn at what ever speed it good for a particular type of burn.

Burning speeds are written in firmware. What media are you using? And what burner/firmware?

You can see all these informations with cd-dvd speed, like in my example

Angel, thanks again for the quick reply. I just bought 16x disks and I think I found the problem. If I put a 8x disk in, the tests on Nero show it will burn at 8x. If I put a 16x disk in, it drops it to 2.4x.

I thought it would be backwards compatible, NOT.

Did you ever feel like you were losing your mind?

It is a Lite-on DVDRW SOHW-832S

I was using cheap Imation DVD RW 8x with no problems.
I just purchased Memorex DVD RW 16x which are causing the problem.

by the way Memorex are not very good either.

Firmware is VPDE 8-19-2004

I found the firmware and found some info on this board about firmware updates at The Firmware Page. I have never done a firmware update. Does anyone know that if there a possibility that it would correct the problem?

ok I just looked at your last thread and saw your log you seem to have the most updated firmware for (HP oem drive)

I dont think this burner can do 16X everything I am seeing on this OLD burner which is no longer sold says 8X


Sorry 16X media will not work with your burner.

Thanks all for the help. I found some great info but none to help at this point. The only thing that I have seen that might help is the firmware update. I may try a few and will let you know.

Did you read the last post I made your burner can not do 16 X
You have to use 8 or 4X media.

Yeah...Its working

I just updated the firmware and tried burning one of the 16x DVDs and it appears to be working OK. It is only abou 1/2 done so I guess I should hold off until it is finished. The DVD appears to be burning at 8x like it did before.

I will let you know if there are any problems.

if he can get it flashed to the regular 832 firmware he should be good to go as
it's fairly recent and should just burn 16x media at 8x.
