Husker, with the 552 burner, I would burn at 8x and no less unless the media you use is 4x media, which is unlikely. I have basically the exact same burner, and it does not like to burn at 4x, the best results come at 8x and on some disc even 12x. But I suggest you stick with 8x.

It is a Samsung drive, just so you know.

          Hi Huskerfan,

Here is a shortcut to a pretty darn good review on your Samsung TS-H552B
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/163/9 I have posted you the Conclusion page. But if you scroll down that pade you can go to any of the 9 pages of the review.

In my opinion, if you are planning to do some serious "backing Up" of your dvd's and PS2 gmaes and so forth to keep your originals clean ... I would do the following ...

          1) Buy a BenQ 1650 (Or if you want Lightscribe get 1655) from NewEgg. (I would say get BenQ 1640 ... but I don't trhink they are available any longer).

          2) Use only Medias like "Verbatim" or "Taiyo Yuden". These are the favorites but there are some other good ones ... so a search and you'll find website that tells you that. Stay away from "Sony" they are crap.

          3) Get yourself the latest copy of "ImgBurn" dvd burning program and it is Free. Always rip to an ISO ... then on 2nd step Burn the ISO. Refrain from one step ripping & burning.

          Hope this helps,
          G!

no contest, samsung has not made a good optical drive in some time, they are turning the corner with their newest models tho. They used to be know for the quality of their combos and cd-burners. I have used them. The 552
is a grade B burner with grade C support. Probably A grade for holding up.
The Benq would be A grade for support and quality, but might not last as long.
Samsung may bring out a serial burner that will be very impressive?

Night, I can not actually compare the two as I would need to have a BenQ installed, but I would say the BenQ is better, but I do get good results with mine. I am sure you have seen the scans I've posted, or you can look at them. Just remember to read the type of media, and also not to pay attention to the QS, as my drive uses a 1.06 ECC. I have been satified with the burn results and have had a few 100 PIF burns, have not yet broke the below 100 mark, but maybe one day. I do usually keep the PIF Max at around 2 with only a couple of spikes reaching 3 maybe a 4 every now and then.

EDIT, I guess Chewy was able to answer the question and has used both. I figured the BenQ was better though.

I would love to see a cross reference between the 552 and benq1650 and see how the pif totals compare

As you know Chewy, I also only use quality media, I think you and I both are usually using the exact media and receiving the batches on the same day.

Do you have a suggestion on how to cross reference, I'm always willing to test, as you should know.

Night, if you are answering me, I do not have a 1650, if I did, I would know how to cross reference the two. I was wondering if he had some other idea or actually still had the 552.

I have never had a 552, have seen plenty of scans with them, yours have been the best by far.

I moved them up from a C to a B after seeing your results, might be firmware maturity. The difference between our burns is clouded by using different scanners. I suspect you would measure slightly higher pif totals with a 8ecc
                              scanner.

I think for now I'll try your suggestion with some good media. burn at 8x.
