Windows 7 doesn’t recognize Sony camcorder

Hi,
I own a Sony “Digital 8” camcorder, model DCR-TRV340.
I capture the videos via FireWire.
Recently I moved to Windows 7 and the OS does not recognize the camcorder.

I was using Windows XP for years, and everything worked like a charm: connect the FireWire cable, turn on the camera, XP identify the device and prompted me to capture video.

With Windows 7 there is no prompt, and the device is not recognized.
I cannot see the camcorder as a device via any software.
I cannot discover the device via windows managers.
The FireWire controller is listed in the ‘Device Manager’ as: “NEC 1394 OCHI Compliant Host Controller”.

The Sony website did not offer any download or update for such a problem.
(I guess the same applies to similar camcorders, such as TRV240, TRV640 etc.)

Did you encounter the problem or know how to solve it ?

have you tried running the tool which is required for the capturing/transfer in XP compatibility mode (check the properties with right-click)?

pro or above offer a special xp mode (a virtual machine firing up xp sp3 in order to run older tools)

I am not familiar with such a tool. Where do I execute it from ?

I am currently using the RC version.
If you're thinking "A ha!" then know the OS did not fail me with any other software.
And anyway, I need to test run it for a while before I buy it.

when i said "tool" i meant that very programme which i thought you would use/run to transfer the data to your pc

how exactly do you go about?

when i transfered dv tapes to a pc i used pinnacle and from within that ool i was able to "capture" the stream to save to pc

so whatever tool you normally use might be worth a closer look:
RIGHT-click it and go to properties and see the tab "compatibility" or something like it

one should normally be able to check "run in xp mode " and after doing so when you start this programme it may look like it always did but run in a different mode maybe problems can be solved this way

I assumed Windows 7 will have a built-in video capture util - like XP did.
XP had Movie Maker - Windows 7 has DVD Maker.
I also tried capturing with Picasa and 'Muvee Producer' on Windows 7.
I just can't see Microsoft removing such a feature from the OS.

Anyway, none of the above identified the camera.


In the past, my favorite program for capturing was Vegas 4.
But I think it is not compatible with 7.

win 7 has so called "windows live movie maker" which seems to be the successor of movie maker

you can start this programme by typing "movie maker" into the search bar (in your start bar)

please see if this "new" movie maker will perhaps recognize your cam and let you import the dv stream

Nothing works-
Movie Maker Live, Movie Maker 2.6 for vista, Vegas 4, Compatibility mode set to XP.
Nothing makes Windows 7 recognize the camcorder.

Does anybody have any idea ?

I've done very little with camcorders so I can't be much help. Generally speaking though, I've found it wise to scour the manufacturer's web page and google for a forum that deals with the specific hardware. Chances are somebody else already solved the problem. You can't be the only one using this device. As example, even though a general Mobile Phone Forum isn't run by the manufacturer, usually there are sub-forums specific to the make of cell phone.

Often the manufacturer will have a board too. Just include the camcorder model in all your googles. You should hit something.

I know this is an old thread, try this and let me know if it works.

•Go to Device Manager and click on IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
•Click on the device listed underneath this heading. In my case it was Texas Instrument 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller
•Right click this device and select 'update driver software' from the shortcut menu
•Then select the option 'browse my computer for driver software'
•Then select the option 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
•This then gave me three drivers to pick from (make sure the'show compatible hardware' checkbox is ticked
•Select the driver named '1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)'
•Install driver

i heard that win 7 is not stable, such problem that some software cant run always happened

I am using Win 7 with Premiere and Encore CS3 with no problem. I'ts more responsive than Vista.

Similar problem with Sony camcorder

I have Sony DCR TRV-315 model. Windows 7 will recognize it
for a few seconds (it appears as a device) then it disappears.
Connected via firewire. I can't make any sense of the reply to
the Nov 14 post. Appreciate any advice...
