I guess at the end of the day its a personal choise in Brand Names really. Everone has there own preferences and they are based on quality, price, reputation, speed, warenty ect ect ect. I bought a Pioneer 16x DVD Rom and its been great. Others may suggest a Sony as they are also a pretty well know brand, I chose the Pioneer as it was Tray load and 16x and $10 cheaper . If your really only using it to rip with and not watch DVD's with, than it only really gets used for 30 minutes while it rips the VOB's to your hard drive.

    Cheers

Pioneers are good - all my DVD-ROM drives have been Pioneer ones.

Toshibas are also quite good, and I guess in the end, as long as the DVD-ROM drive has a region-free solution, they are all pretty good (but getting a better/well known brand could mean better build quality). You can check whether the DVD-ROM drive you want has a region-free (RPC-1) solution here :

i would NOT go for a toshiba for DVD ripping!!!

they are excellent for copying and clone-cd compatible, but their ripping speed has always been a MASSIVE problem!

it is not seldom that a toshiba drive will only rip a 2x speed!!!!!

thus, you'll need some 45+ min for simply transfering the data to your hdd, whereas other drives will have completed this basic task within 5-10 min!

i'm using a pioneer and an LG in my pc's and they both work fast and reliable, but i would never ever buy a toshiba if i were to rip dvd's!

UncasMS is probably right - I didn't read your question properly (I though you were just asking which DVD-ROM drive is best for playback).

Where I live (Australia), Pioneers DVD-ROM drives are quite popular - almost all computer suppliers stock them, and most computer systems solve here come with them, and because they are quite common, they are not that expensive either.

I am using the slot version of the drive, but the tray is just as good, and probably better for playing smaller (non standard) sized CD/DVDs, or those business-card-on-a-CD type things that are so popular nowadays.

I'm a very long way from an expert, but I'm using WindowsXP and I like it. There are still problems to be sure, but I think in the end, this is going to be the best operating system in a long time. I just hate it that Bill Gates makes a fortune forcing us to buy the same old retooled thing year after year. At least with XP, they bulit from the ground up and got away from the old cut and paste.
