Need some help: Converted dvd is now in widscreen format and I can't resize

    Hey,

I'm a newbie and a real moron. I'm following Nicky's guide for ripping dvds. Had absolutely NO PROB ripping the dvd with smartripper: What a great program.

However, I'm not sure I got the divx codec to install properly as I installed the DivX 5.0.2 Bundle. Does that install the needed 3.11 Alpha codec? I didn't not see the Mpeg4 codec avail when attempting to convert the file using Flask Mpeg.

Anyway, I followed his instructions but my question is about the file type and resizing. First of all is his conversion using Flask Mpeg used to create files for dvd quality burning or vcds? I'm confused on that point because size of the entire dvd I ripped is about 800 mbts so I can't see how this would be dvd quality.

Finally, I managed to walk through the conversion with Flask Mpeg but the file seems to be converted and saved in a widscreen format. When attempting to resize using flask AFTER the conversion I can't seem to access the file. The file is an ATI file. Is my ATI TV Wonder software changing the file or something? Strange.

Or am I supposed to resize the file BEFORE running the conversion program (Flask Mpeg) I was under the assumption that you A) Rip the dvd to the hd. B) Convert the file using Flask then C) Resize the converted file.

Are steps b & c done simultaneously or one after the other?

Any other advice would be great. I'm still confused about basic file conversions AFTER ripping the dvd. I'd like to be able to rip dvds and then burn them onto dvd media at the highest possible quality.

    Please Help.

"I'd like to be able to rip dvds and then burn them onto dvd media at the highest possible quality."

You are using the wrong software. Flask and the DivX-related codecs are intended for CONVERTING DVD videos to highly compressed format for viewing on your computer.

    1) Click on the DVD Digest (NOT DivX Digest) link at the top of the page - and read some of the excellent tutorials

    2) Read the postings in the "DVD" subforums here

divx3 in combination with flask is a very bad choice and those guides are way out of date!

the only tool enabling decent quality with divx3 was NANDUB

still you get better results using divx 5.02 but i would NOT recommend flask.

click my anigif for a detailed guide on using GORDIANKNOT + DIVX5 which should be the way to go!

no routine is simple or absolutely easy for a beginner, but almost everybody who testet gordianknot will asure you, that its reliability, flexibility and output quality will be worth your time.

sorry, i misread your final sentence on burning to dvd

          stay away from my guide!

it is meant for mpeg4 not mpeg2
