    2 Pass Encoding

    Hey everyone.

Eh. To make it short, could someone link me to a good (=detailed) guide to 2-pass encoding? I'm working with Vdub, and I dont really care about the codec, can be either XviD or any version of DivX.

    Thanks in advance.

Run the conversion using "2-pass, first pass" mode, and when done, re-run the conversion using "2-pass, second pass". Remember to specify the location of the LOG (for DivX 4 & 5) or STATS (for XviD) file.

Eh, that's not all to it isn't it? I figured that part out, but I know the files should be joined and stuff. Also, since the bitrate isn't constant, I'll have to do different calculations if I want to fit it in a single CD (or whatever filesize), won't I?

Oh, and UncasMS - I'd rather work with Vdub, the only guide I found on your site was for GordianKnot.

More detailed help if you will

gordianknot as well as dvx use VIRTUALDUB as transcoding tool.

i dont see your point, let alone the question for a guide then.

I'm basically encoding a 1300 megs video into a 700 megs one. I tried doing it with CBR, but at a few points the video went really bad, so I figured 2 pass might get the job done better.

I first encoded the first pass, then the second. First I got a ~60 megs avi file and a 6 megs log file. Then I opened up the codec properties again, and with the exact same settings, chose second pass, and after a while I got a 695 megs file. Did I do everything right? For some reason I thought you need to somehow 'join' those two files. When I encoded the second pass, it didnt look like it was checking anything about the first pass file and/or log file.

both tools (gk + dvx) will provide you with automated 2 pass transcoding.

dvx is more advanced (xvid, ogg, divx5.03 etc support), though
