just a little guidance

I am truely a newbie at this and befor I go very far I have one question.

I am just tring ultimitly to backup up my aging vhs tapes of m,y favority movies but before I go out a buy a video capture card I tried to backup a DVD I have. but anyway my question it is posible to create cd that will play on my stand alone DVD player from either a vhs or DVD is this corret? I when thru the guides and thought I understood but so far I only have a collection of coasters.

in case your standalone DOES accept cd-r's (most do) you can capture your videos and turn them into formats like VCD (which is an mpeg1 format)

most standalone players can play vcd and since vhs tapes do not have as good a resolution as dvd material, vcd is sufficient as a final format!
