Toshiba brand DVD-ROM's are good. I have a older TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1502 Firmware version: 1012

It has read every disc I have put in it, and some were pretty scratched up too.

      To Ex-Copy

"I am noticing as well that the discs are gold in colour and have been advised that this may be causing problems as it could be too reflective for the drive to read properly."

The gold color is indicative of the fact that it is a double-layered DVD - as are the vast majority of commercial DVDs. Your burner, as well as ANY burner and or DVD-ROM (player), is supposed to be able to recognize such media. If, in fact, there is ANY double-layered, commercial, pressed DVD that is of the correct Region that your burner cannot read , return the burner to the place of purchase in exchange for a new replacement.

I couldn't help but notice that yours (a SONY DRU 510A) is an older burner. Perhaps you should try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on it. Maxell makes one that retails for approximately $10US...

        ## Any suggestions as to what the better brands of DVD Rom drives are right now would be appreciated ##
"lite-on" combo drive is a good choice, but they're a poor cd-da burner (always have been) - for dvd work = great
