Surround sound with s/w DVD players

    Hi there
I just want to ask how can one listen to 5.1 surround sound using a PC
I have a SB Platinum that has 5.1, and at ATI Radeon DV card, does the sound depend on the software DVD player?
I had a look at all the FAQ's but there was no detail analysis on how sound works.
I am looking into buying a 5.1 speaker system, so I want to know if it is possible with my configuration first.
Speaking of which, does anyone has any recommendations on what speakers to get?

    Thanks in advance

    5.1 should be DOLBY DIGITAL
    surround should be 2.0!

surround can be played with quite a few soundcards and any apropriate speaker system like e.g. cambridge soundworks.

i have no idea on 5.1, though.

So is Dolby Surround Sound independent of the s/w DVD player, if you have the appropriate hardware? (soundcard& speakers?)

      Thanks

even wmp can play surround mp3 audio streams within your avis.

the soundcard and speaker will have to support it above all
