Newbie Avatar Question

I have no idea what these are called, but I can describe them. I am on another chat board for another subject, and I would like to add a "moving" avatar. I have a place to upload the file, but I don't know how to create it. I'm looking to do a 2-3 second video clip from a DVD I own. I want to take that 2-3 seconds, and create a loop so that it repeats. Remember that I am a newbie. Please speak to me in simple terms if possible. Thanks for your help.

you will have to take single pictures from that clip of yours or otherwise you will end up with too many frames resulting in too big files

what you want to create is an animated gif but it is not at all possible to describe all the necessary steps to someone who has never dealt with a graphic tool before, which seems to be the case here

ask a friend to do the work and inform yourself about the maximum filesize and resolution allowed for the avatar before you have somebody create the ava

Is there a specific file type that avatars need to be saved in here? I've tried hosting one on ImageShack, but it says invalid file. I didn't see any specifics as to what kind of file it needs to be.

hmm, are you sure it really says gif at the end?

moreover you will have to keep an eye on the restrictions: resolution + filesize

I created a slideshow instead using Bigoo.ws, and I couldn't get the code to upload via imageshack. I have no idea why it won't work. Can anybody out there recommend another good free slideshow site? Thanks.

Just using a crappy program to edit. I kept trying to resize it to fit, but it kept going back to its original for some damn reason. The other one was gif, too, but wouldn't work. Skipped ImageShack and just uploaded it. Thanks for the help!!

You can upload a larger avatar for a user thru the mod panel.
