    Picture Distortion with VirtualDub 1.4.7

I'm running the fast-motion divx 3.11 codec simply because the divx 4 and 5 codecs endup making the picture extremely distorted.

I encode at 4000 kbps with sharp selected, hoping to get an extremely clear picture. Not the case. I use files that are off of video tape and ripped from dvds. I see squares that are close to the color of the picture area they are contained in, and crispness goes straight to hell. I have divx movies I downloaded that have extremely clear pictures, with half the bit rate. Even downloaded divx files recorded from video look clearer than my dvd to divx files.

Are there any faqs or write ups on clearing the picture quality on files?

    Thanks everyone.

Use low-motion instead. Fast-motion removes details from the video too much.

      Just as bad

The low motion codec is just as bad. Only difference is the fast motion codec actually plays smoother and has tons less distortion in the beginning.

      Any other ideas?

Post your encoding methods here and we'll see what's wrong. Keep in mind that your resolution has to be multiples of 16.

          My method

I'm using CladDVD XP 1.3. The ripped files (1024 in size per vob file) play perfectly before any compression. Then vfapi reader to get a fake avi file made. That file looks great itself, but no audio as expected. I am using whatever resolution the dvd was encoded to, happens to be 720 X 480, 29.970 fps. Encoding at 4000 kbps on fast motion and 900 kbps on slow motion. The audio is 128 kpbs at 48 khz mp3. I tried Divx 4 and 5 codecs, and those were a lot worse. Audio volume is raised to 400%. Everything else is left alone.

I tried putting the picture to the tv. Video looks better, but the destortions are still there.

          Hope that helps.

The resolution you are using is too high for the bitrate you are using (900 - LM). Crop off the black bars and shrink the video resolution down to at most 640x(). That will allow you to get better picture quality.

Lastly, you will want to do a 2-pass encoding procedure to maximise your quality at the given bitrate. DivX4 or 5 is the easiest and more fool-proof (compared to 3.11) codec to use for doing 2-pass encoding. If you want to do 2-pass encoding with 3.11, you will have to use nandub, a modified version of virtualdub.

              Just as bad

I did a segment of the movie in DIVX 4.12 with 2 pass coding. Teh picture remarkably better than using 1 pass coding, but with two pass, the picture is just as bad as one pass with divx 3.11. I followed the 2 pass write ups to the letter.

I plan to check out 2 pass with divx 3.11.

despite the fact that i dont like divx4 (5 is much better) i cant believe that a 2 pass divx4 is NOT any better looking than a dix 3 rip with ~900kbps

DIVX 5 has spam ware. Screw that!!!! I have enough pop ups to deal with without having a codec send them to me all the time. My computer is my computer, not divx 5 creator's equipment.

The 2 pass coding on divx4 seems to play easier. I'm going to use that, but the picture is just as bad as 3.11. I can't find any writeup on 2 pass for divx 3.11. So you all know, I am using 4 different computers, just in case it's the compupter I am using. It's not.

well, this statement only shows, you're not aware of the perfectly legal solution to avoid GAIN.

Talk about the AVI file container, and the Divx/Xvid codecs that are most commonly found in AVI files

i have NO PROBLEM AT ALL on my machines with divx5.02!

That's alright. I have pop up blocking running. Plus, I already removed all the registry components and the exe file. Took 1/2 hr to figure out all the registry additions and get rid of them. No spyware running on my machine. hehehehe.

                      to those adware morons.

After running the divx 5 codec, interesting results came up. The picture actually cleared up on my video tape ripped AVIs. The dvd rips look better, but there's still some distortion. So far, DIVX5 is better.

thanks for the help everyone. Thanks to UncasMS for pointing out the adware blocking posts.
