Can't burn CDs after installing new DVD drive

Here's my problem: I got a Sony 190A DVD drive for Christmas, and installed it a few days ago. I replaced my old CD-RW drive with the new one, and left in the CD-R drive. Finally I was able to start burning DVDs. Today I tried to burn a CD using the CD-R drive as I always had. But it doesn't show up anywhere on any of my burning programs. I can put in a CD and listen to it in the drive, but when I want to burn a CD that drive is not listed as an option. So...... I have been trying to burn a CD using the DVD drive, which I should be able to do. However, I have tried several times with different programs (Real Player, Nero, Roxio, and Windows Media), and each time the audio "looks" like it burns, but when it is put into a CD player or back into the computer (either drive), it says the disc is empty. Each time the burning was error-free except for Nero since I clicked the "check after burning" or whatever. I've done this 5 times and I'm tired of the exact same thing happening each time. I know this forum is for DVDs but I found it a few days ago while putting the new drive in and it seems better than any CD forum I've found.

I was going to post the burn log from Nero here, but I just realized that I deleted it. I had it saved in the music folder, and I deleted that folder to re-download the files to see if that was the problem.

    dvd rw's burn dvd's and cd's

    cd rw's burn cd's

    cd-rom's only read cd's

Real Player, Nero, Roxio, and Windows Media
all those programs don't get along well and anything is liable to happen, even the drives disappearing from my computer and device manager

OK, I had seen on a couple other sites that it might be programs interfering with each other but I didn't want to just start removing them until I got some specific advice.

Which programs do you recommend I keep and which should I get rid of? Thanks!!

nero was the only one mentioned that doesn't mess up other programs

You don't just remove 1 or 2 and then it's fixed

You remove all of them and clean the registry, if that's the problem?

Nero is the only one that is new, all the others have been on for a year or more.

Is there a program that you recommend to clean the registry? I have done that once before but I don't remember how I did it.

            if that's the problem?
there are basically 2 courses of action

one is to try different hardware in your computer and/or try your hardware in another computer

            this isolates the software/hardware issue

If you feel it's the software one then use these links to fix(if that's the problem)

we can analyze the filter drivers

Microsoft support is here to help you with Microsoft products. Find how-to articles, videos, and training for Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365, Windows, Surface, and more.

It's kind of weird that I have NEVER had this problem and I use nero a lot for a long time

I DO fairly frequently run the nero clean tool and reinstall when I think it's getting the least bit glitchy

you can play around with these or just remove all programs and clean everything up and reinstall nero and test

I don't really have the option of trying different hardware or a different computer to test. So I will try to clean everything up later today or tomorrow.

I searched the internet before posting on here, and I wasn't able to find anyone who had this same issue. So hopefully this will work! Thanks for the help and I will let you know after I have a chance to try this.

I checked that file. It contains only 3 burn logs, which are the first 3 DVDs I burned. I have burned 4 DVDs (1 failure) and 1 CD (failure) total since installing the drive.

if you want we can use the best burn program to troubleshoot the issue

                    Imgburn

don't worry it won't mess anything up and it comes with a tool to fix what other programs mess up

ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit... and it's free!

let us know if you want to go that route

any nero log would have been better than no nero log

I decided to sacrifice another CD to give you a burn log....and this time it burned and plays fine. I guess 6th time is a charm. Don't know why though since I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything different this time.

I think I will still remove Roxio and Rp just to be sure. Thanks for all your help!

Scratch that about it playing good... Most of the CD is ok but the last few songs skip badly. I burned at the slowest option that nero gave which was 8x. Is there any way to slow that down even more?

we don't get a good mid code from any log with blank cd's, so what actual brand did you use

I have had good luck only with verbatim and sony branded cd's

taiyo yuden ones, very hard to find and pricey are the best(made in japan only)

I have been using maxelle and napster brand cds. This last one (7th try) that I just burnt was an hp brand because I have ran out of my napter cds.

On this last CD I'm back to the original problem of error-free burning but then the CD player says "No Disc". I keep hoping there is something obvious and easy that I'm doing wrong. Here is the burn log for it:
