Just gave Rebuilder a try last night and am completely satisfied with the outcome. Took 232 mins, but the resulting output was virtually like the original. I also used Shrink on the same movie and though the results were good, there was definitely a noticeable difference.
I am going to try Rebuilder on a few more movies to get the hang of it and then most likely will get the Pro version.
Any 'tips' or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- different encoders can make a difference

- using filters may sometimes be useful

- reducing extras to half d1 resolution and lowering the bitrate on that part by 25-33% will improve the main movie some more

Here's some more ideas:

1. Kill all extras! (How many times you gunna watch them anyway?)

2. For the free encoders, I found Hank's to be superb. You can use RME with it, too (so just download the matrices and tick the one which falls in your average bitrate).

3. Always use multi-pass encoding - the time it takes is well worth it IMHO.

I did use HC enc 0.17, and I'll find out what you mean by RME.

To kill the extras I need the Pro version right? Well worth it to upgrade to Pro once I get the hang of it. Thanks again for the tips.

killing extras / unwanted material can of course be done with VOBBLANKER (freeware)

give vobblanker a try, you wont want to miss it once you used it a couple of times

Thanks, I have used Blanker on occasions but haven't used it much lately. I mostly do movie only and rarely keep everything. But I did see that the Pro version of DVD-RB has that option if I'd like and that's a good option to have.

I just love the quality that it produces down to a DVD5. Great difference, which I plan to use on even movie-only back-ups that require a lot of compression.

For low bitrate movies I highly recommend AQE it also does a great job with high bitrate movies

Like SAPSTAR himself had said, the key difference between HC and AQE is the QmatOp, rest make your pick.
