DivX (VBR audio) to VCD problem...

    Hi all,

I have a DivX file (715Mb) that seems to have VBR audio. When I load the file in VirtualDub, I get the message attached in the .jpg below.

I also included the file info from VirtualDub.

So, if I try to convert to VCD directly with TMPGENC, I get no audio. I then tried to extract the audio track to .wav with VirtualDub. This gave me a 1.25Gb file. I also extracted a silent .avi file (580Mb). I tried those two in TMPGENC and I get a file with no audio. Next, I tried Multiplexing this .mpg file with the .wav file and TMPGENC tells me that "Multiplexing linear PCM stream to system stream is not supported". Ok, now I converted the .wav to .mp3 and tried to multiplex that. That worked BUT, I end up with a 1 Gb VCD file... That is to big to fit on one CD-R.

My question is: Did I do everything right and if I did, how do I get that 1Gb file down to 700Mb?

To Seperate the Audio from the Video in virtualdub is easy go to
Go to Audio and set it to Direct Stream Copy
    Click on "File"
    and then "Save WAV".
Enter the file name you want for your audio, and give it a ".mp3" extension.
Then set Audio to "No Audio"
    Then Save as AVI

You can then use any mp3 converter to make it into a constant bitrate mp3.

Open the Soundless AVI back up in VirtualDub
Set Video to Full Processing Mode
Set Audio to Direct Stream Copy
Then you select the type of file your audio is
Find and Select the Audio file

    Then Save as AVI

Then convert it to VCD using TMPGEnc

Yes, you've done everything correctly. As I'm sure you know, MPEG-1/MPEG-1VideoCD files are considerably larger (up to twice the filesize) than DivX-compressed .AVI files - so your results are normal.

You can typically fit up to 80 minutes of VCD-compliant video/audio on a 700Mg/80 minute CD-R. Therefore, you'll have to split your VCD onto two CD-Rs. This too can be easily and precisely accomplished using TMPGEnc. Under the "Files" dropdown menu, click on "MPEG Tools" and select the "Merge & Cut" tab. Once again, make sure to change the mode to "MPEG1-Video CD". Load your file and enter a new (.MPG) name in the "Output file" box. Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL file's name in the window, which will bring you to the cutting area. Select your desired start and end points for the first half, click on "Okay" which will bring you back to the first window and generate (in a sequence of three automated steps) the first new file. To create the second new file, repeat the steps starting with "Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL..." (be extra patient with the second half, as the program has to do more seeking to establish the beginning of the new file).

Use a burning program, such as NERO to burn your CD-R or R/W CD as a VCD (DON'T ask NERO to format the file as a VCD, since you've already accomplished this!)

      Let us know of your success ;>}

        To Doubleoseven,
Are you using virtualdub or VD Mod?
When you open your video file with VD,does it ask u if u would like to rewrite the audio header? What do u choose?

which one do u suggest and if audio is 158.6(+/-)13.9.what should my constant bitrate be?

            Thanks for the replies guys!

I know that MPEG-1 VideoCDs are larger than DivX but I guess I was looking for a way to bring down the original .avi down so the resulting VCD file would fit onto one CD-R. But that's OK, I got the sound back and I have cut the VCD in two CD-Rs. Thanks setarip!

For som1dies, I am using VirtualDub 1.5.4. What is VD Mod? And by the way, VD *tells* me it will rewrite the audio header, I selected "OK".

            Thx again all,
            D07

              to som1dies

More than likely I would set it to 160kbps

As for which program to use. Hmmmm use CDex
