Converting Vob

Hello,
I recently have saved a few old home movies from VHS to DVD. Before giving them as gifts, i want to add some special effects with adobe and other programs. First, however, I need to convert the files to something the programs will work with. I do not want to pay money for a program I am only going to use once. Is there any free programs out there that will convert these files completely without putting a logo on them or only doing a certain percentage of the files?

can you rename the extension to ".mpg" to get them to load in your editing software?

When you have finished editing your video you may want to take a look at one of Lt. Columbos great guides on converting it back to dvd.

I'm at work right now so I apologize for being brief on this. Here is my draft on what you can do. Perhaps, someone will come along before I get off work and piggyback on it.

1. Demux your VOB with PgcDemux. (Free)

2. Convert your ac3 audio file to mp2 or wav with BeLight. (free)

3. Merge m2v(video) and your mp2/wav (audio) with TMPGenc into a mpeg file. (free)

This mpeg-2 file should work for your application. Now, don't expect this to be an easy quick job. There is some learning curve here. But the good side is that you don't have to spend a cent, right?

Just need you to clarify here about your files on your DVD.

Are they authored in a DVD structure? Like your commercial DVD.

or are they just video files stored on a DVD data disc?

in the folder i copied them to from disc to hard drive.. there 9 files:

video_ts.bup (backup of ifo)
video_ts.ifo
vts_01_0.ifo
vtos_01_0.bup (backup of ifo)
and 5 vob files

i have a feeling my next hurdle will be to figure out how to use adobe AE to put in the effects i want but.. that will come as soon as i can figure out how to get the program to recognize these files

I don't use Adobe After Effects but what I've read, it needs AVI inputs. So what you need to do is convert VOB files to an AVI.
