    DivX MP4 file format

    My question is quite easy:

    - The MP4 format, which can be created using the DivX codec, is readable from "home DVD readers" (I mean those used with television)?

If not, what is this format?

    Thanks for your help

      Thanks.
But then the DivX MP4 format is the same as the correspondent avi. The only difference is the extension, isn'it?

      Thanks again

No the MP4 fileformat is diffrent from the avi file format. Of course this issue can easily be confused because, some people like naming divx encoded avi files *.divx. While the the divx5 codec can also make MP4 files and name them *.divx.

          Which format is better?

The Avi format coded with DivX, or the MP4 one?

          Thanks again for your help!

Qualitywise it doesn't matter much, since the video stream format is the same.

The only difference is the overhead incurred by the fileformat.
Avi files has an overhead of about 1-1.5%, I'am not sure about the MP4 fileformat but the overhead is probably a bit less. The primary problem with the MP4 fileformat, is the extremely limited audio and player support. Which makes it virtually unusable.
