Simplest way to cut scenes from encoded movie?

Can anyone describe the best way to cut a scene from an encoded divx? Or would I be better off doing this before encoding?

For cutting a scene from an existing AVI file:
    1. Open file in Virtual/nandub
    2. Set both Video and Audio tabs to Direct Stream Copy
    3. Use the Mark In/Out buttons to specify the start and end of the new file respectively
    4. Go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file

However, if you are encoding the movie yourself, it is recommended (of course) to specify the Mark In/Out positions prior to encoding, so as to save you time.

Hmmm - what i want to do exactly is edit out 3 or four scenes. How do i mark them out in one pass?

Do them one by one (ie. scene by scene).

I'm not sure if you can do this (since I've not personally tried it out), but try and see if you can specify the jobs for each scene in VD's Job Control panel. If you can, that will save you a lot of trouble and time.

Ok what is my other option (pre-encoding)? Vdub messes up the audio sync.

Similar to what I outlined above, only that you need to set the Video tab to Full Processing Mode and choose the DivX codec (along with configuring it). If necessary, go to Video -> Frame Rate and select "Change so video and audio durations match."

p.s I'm curious. What is the bitrate and sampling rate of your audio stream?

You should be able to do this in one go with nandub, by using Direct Stream copy after encoding the entire movie.

Use the mark-in and mark out buttons to select one of the scenes you want to cut out, select Video->'delete frames'. Repeat this for all the sections you want to delete. And save as avi.

Edit: Of course you have to set the mark-in/out points at a key frame

I just tested this myself (cutting out a huge chunk of an old encoding) and it seems to keep the audio sync perfectly.

it is very easy just select the part you want to have in virtual dub and use the direct stream function
Let's all try to help each other

Exactly what is the point of this message ? aside from increasing your post count.

Yeah, but I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt.
