Extra MB from nowhere :/

Hi.

I am trying to convert a dvd to divx using GordianKnot and the 3.11a video codec in 2-pass mode.

I encoded a VBR mp3 and it turned out at 99.0MB - I did this separately as previously when GK was guessing the file size of the mp3 the final avi was under- sized.

I then encoded the video and it came to 601MB. Together they came to 700MB - by selecting both files > properties.

I then muxed (is it called muxing? - combined or whatever ) the audio and video in nandub and it totalled 706MB which is about 4MB over CD limit.

At first I thought it might be the interleaving or something so I tried interleaving the audio every 25 frames rather than every 1 frame, but this made no difference.

I just wondered where the extra data (is overheads the technical term ?) is coming from and what causes it. I don't really want to have to chop any credits off, as I like a full movie (they are already compressed separately in GK)

muxing audio and video always requires some additional mb for the frame overhead.

gordianknot for example will give you an idea of the size which will roughly be added (or extracted from the videostream to be created).

btw: you should give gk + divx5 a try.

i prefer divx5 to divx3!

Ok, thanks for the tip - I'll encode the same dvd to divx 5 and compare the outcomes
