Best way to make DivX from AVI

I am trying to create 45 min video CD's to play on laptop computers, with the best quality possible.
The footage is of rugby games, and needs to be viewed full screen.

I have achieved good results with Quicktime 6 creating MPEG 4 at a high bit rate etc. However to do this I have to first convert the DV footage from .AVI to Quicktime.mov in MSP 6. This all takes a great deal of time.

Is there a stand alone program I can buy which will take DV .avi direct, and then convert it to the very highest quality, but small file size?

Also does anybody know of a good DVD player for playing DivX etc?

The Kiss one seems favorite at the mo.

    TIA

While quality is a subjective matter, I would recommend you use Virtualdub (free software at www.virtualdub.org) and either of the following mpeg-4 codecs:

      SBC (requires NANDUB--hack of virtualdub)
Divx 5.02 pro (2 pass with b-frames perhaps)
      XVID 2 pass

I would suggest you read the guides and articles here on divx/xvid encoding as well as searching this forum. Also take a look at the guides at doom9.org and vcdhelp.com The doom9.org forum may have some very good tips, so search the posts there.
