I can't play AVI file

This is my very first time posting on forum, and I'm very new to this.
what i've been trying to do is to watch the the movie, AVI format, from microsoft media player, but nothing happen. Therefore, I switched to different program called "WinDVD" but still don't work. I asked to my friend about this, then he said that i need Codecs? I'm an old women, and this is very complicated to me. so could you tell me what I need to do to watch the video?

You probably just need a codec, like your friend said. Its best to determine a whole codec pack which has all the codecs you would need, they will let you play the movie. Search on www.google.com for "Nimo Codec Pack". Then download and install it and you will be able to watch the movie.

there is still problem

Thank you for the advice. I downloaded the Nimo Codec Pack and installed it on my computer successsfully, but when i clicked on the Divx Player, the error message said

"The Divx Player was unable to load the interface skin you selected nor the default interface skin Please reinstall the DivX Player"

so, i uninstalled the Nimo Codec Pack and installed again, but it still shows the same error. I wonder if my OS is not supported.. It's Windows XP....

any idea?

that error message refers to the (crappy) divx player not to any installed codec.

use a decent player like windows media plyer 6.4 (run => mplayer2.exe), bsplayer or zoomplayer

make sure codecs are in same file as player you use.some divx players are naff.another pack to look for is called Acemcp.exe.Lots of codecs in it, just remember open them in same file as player or the player wont see codec .

Your statement is incorrect. As long as the codecs are properly installed on your SYSTEM, any program that refers to codecs will "see" them (Otherwise, you'd be copying codecs to the directories of evry single program that uses them!) ;>}

I'm about to give up

I relocate the codecs to the same place with the player, but i still couldn't view the file. i guess it dosen't matter!! just like setarip said...

so i used the Windows madia player 9.0 to view the avi file.. of course i still can't view the file , the error message said " the format is not supported."...

I wonder if the file i'm trying to see is bad file or not. because i can see other avi files, but not this one.

so i went to properties of this damn avi file, and i checked the format to see if it's different from the other AVI files.

the video compression is: divxmgp4 v3
the Audio format is: Windows Media Audio V2...

but honestly, i don't know what else i can do...

all i want to do is to just want to see the video of my brother sent to me....

Sure you are ;>} - your choice of terminology (OS, codec, properties, etc.) indicates otherwise. Besides, there's no need to try to elicit sympathy or gentle responses at these boards...

i finally could view the file but...

haha i get busted!! setarip you a have keen observation... i laugh out hard myself... so sorry i'll be good girl from now on...

well, so far, i dl the "nandub-binary-1.0rc2" and this packet came with many different files, and i'm not faimilier with them at all. so i just opened the program called "Nandub video processing tool" to open my avi file,,, then it did it. i finally could see the movie.... but it seems like the movie is really short compare to size of the file... it 18 Megs... what do you think?

download and install it - it should solve your problem (at least for the video)

I just download the divx player alpha again, and this time it worked, YES. i don't know why when i first time tried, didn't work.... i must doing something stupid...
