Need help dividing a Xvid file

Hi, ususally Nero does a fine job of doing the encoding and burning but I have been recommended a site which gives me a step by step way to do the encoding using TMPge and extracting the sound with Virtualdub, I will try it with a movie I already have on harddrive which Nero refuses to do!!!!
