How do I IVTC this movie?

How do I make DVD2AVI or VirtualDub [or, if that is impossible, in something else] to do a correct IVTC?
When I choose Forced FILM in DVD2AVI, it combines the wrong fields so that every fouth frame gets interlaced. When I use automatic IVTC in VirtualDub, some interlaced frames slip through. Also in one place of the movie, the part showed on a TV screen is differently IVTCed than the rest of the picture. Should I just feed the whole thing through a deinterlacer (which one), and/or perform an IVTC first (where and how)? Very thankful for any tips that'll make me able to encode this as high quality as possible and without any interlacing artifacts.

Have you tried from within VirtualDub, from the "Video" dropdown menu, clicking on "Framerate" and then selecting "Inverse Telecine (3:2 pulldown removal)", "Reconstruct from fields - adaptive"?

Yes, that's the one that works best, but some interlaced frames still gets through now and then. Is there a good deinterlacer than can catch those without degrading the quality of the rest of the movie, or is it something else I need to do?

there are a couple of very good vd/avisynth filters for this task:

        decomb
        tomsmocomp
        greedyhma

OK, I'll check out those and see if they work.
