xmpeg vs GK, which is better?

Hi everyone,

I am lazy, and due to this, I am asking you which is the best divx encoder proggy to use? xmpeg or GK (or any other). I'd be putting emphasis on quality and speed, in that order. So far I have only fiddled with xmpeg. I am not concerned about audio encoding.

So which one, and why?

The good thing about Xmpeg is that it can rip straight off the dvd, but I still prefer GK.

Can I ask why it is bad to rip straight from the DVD drive?

Ok, looks like I should start using GK now... I read somewhere (prolly a forum post) that GK just sets everything up, and that you actually use VirtualDub to do it....

Would I be right in assuming that GK helps you with getting the cropping/resizing params right but it is the divx codec that does it in the end?

Does anyone know if ac3 compression uses a fixed low pass filter?

Sorry bout the seemingly random questions.. but I think I've learnt a lot about this stuff in the last couple of days..

Assuming that ripping in this case means conversion to AVI as well, it IS a bad thing. Conversion generally takes a few hours to many hours to complete. If you were reading data off the DVD all that time, the drive would be working non-stop during that time period. I won't be surprised if the drive fails anytime too soon.

The auto-crop feature is useful, though you may at times need to correct it a bit when it does not crop properly enough (ie. some remaining black bars). The DivX codec, in the case of GK, simply takes care of the compression. It has nothing to do with cropping & resizing, even if it has such features built in.

Yeah um I didn't think XMpeg was very "funny" but my vote goes to GK. So many options so easy to work with..

GKNOT is good for divx 5.02 pro, simplifies a lot of things.

But you may also want to give DVX a try, I've heard some good things about it.

The only "turn off" to DVX would be the .NET framework (may require you to install additional components). A good thing is that it's open source, and consistently developed and even compatible with the latest divx codec.

DVX touts itself as an open-source alternative to GK, it's not a codec but an encoding tool.

Thanks for the info, Batman. Since I hardly use GK nowadays, I doubt I find any need to use DVX anyway. It's good to know there's something even better than GK though.
