One more time: what is the best way to encode dvd files to divx?

I ripped a dvd of 2 hours and 50 minuyes using dvd2avi and then tmpeg encoder, the result was good but the size of the file was too big (1.7 gigas). Then i tried with flask mpeg but i couldnt encode the all movie, only a part of it, and i have tried with gordian knot and dvd to omg, but it was impossible to do! I dont know why this happened, but im desperate and new in this stuff. Could anybody tell me why this happened? some tips? and whats the best way to encde dvd to divx? Thanx for your attention. i use flaskmpeg for practically all my dvd ripping, anything longer than 1.5 hrs is not going to have good quality if u put it one cd.
u have to set the right resolution and bitrate to get the desired results, it takes a while and exp but once u go thru the learning curve, it will be hecka lot easier for you.

        nothing has changed

if you use decent tools and codecs, even 120 might look very fine.

i realize what you are saying, i tried that with many movies, but i always felt two discs were kinda more suitable for 2 hr movies, then again its my own opinion and choice..and i passed it on to fellow posters.
I have seen some 2 hr movies below 700 megs and they look abs amazing..i dont rip mainstream dvds, i get dvds for free because i work for best buy so theres no point
i only rip some adult titles and over there i dont care abt the quality/size that much you know what i mean !!

back to the topic my first choice will be a TWO PASS conversion using virtualdub.

this task can easily achieved with tools like GORDIANKNOT or DVX, the latter is even more advanced imho - both tools, however, or even manually setting up virtualdub should result in very similar hq video files.

divx5 as well as latest xvid versions are excellent video codecs.
the best audio codec is OGG VORBIS from my point of view.

I've been using DVX with 5.0.2 and it rocks! Yesterday I did a test and encoded the same show (50 minutes long) as both an avi and ogm using DVX. I really didn't see much of a difference.

The bitrate for the ogm ended up being 900 instead of 850 for the avi but the video quality was about the same.

I assume the real difference is when encoding large or 2 disk movies?

                      no

the advantage of ogg vorbis is that you can use lower bitrates and still have good quality compared to mp3.

take an mp3 128kbps for example.
an ogg with ~60-70kbps might sound just as good.

using a lower bitrate for the audio, however, will let you use more bitrate for the video stream and thus improve your movie.

i wouldnt know why your filesize was that way off size but it must be a configuration error.

i haven experienced any such differences in all my dvx ogm encodings - and i did quite a lot ever since i came across dvx motre than 6 month ago.

No, the file size was fine, it's the bitrate that was different because the ogg format is more efficient.

I was just pointing out that when I played the two files side-by-side (350mb avi at a bitrate of 850 and 350mb ogm at 900) I didn't really see a difference in the quality.

But if I were to encode the same show to a size of say..1400mb the difference would probably be alot more noticeable, yes?

Thanks for your advices, im going to try it and let you know, coz is still killing me, but i wont give up. Somebody told me that if i used flaskmpeg as an encoder and then virtual dob to put the movie together would work great! but i would have to encode every .vob file in the movie right? what do you guys tink about this? is it a good way to do it? Thanks again for your answers. Scdlcgs

of course you will not always spot a big difference in any file when there's some 50kbps difference.

but since the sound quality is the same/equal when using lower ogg bitrates certain parts of the movie might gain from the additional bitrate input.

morever, the OGM container format is superior to avi:
multiple audio stream handling, subtitles, better error correction.

well, no other format for me any more than OGM.

                            ++++

is it a good way to do it?
                            NO

decent tools like gordianknot or even DVX will let you handle all vobs consecutively and with virtualdub+avisynth you'll have the best possible quality available.
