DivX 5.04... Do you like it?

Hey guys how do you guys like the new DivX 5.04? I haven't done any encoding with it. Is it worth going for the pro version I heard that it has a really cool encoding feature that lets you compress senes of your choice more than the others and such.

hi there. ive done a few rips and a few tv encodes and have to say IMO 5.04 is the best divx release yet of all versions. and EKG a program that comes with the bundle lets you increase or decrease the quality of certain areas that need your attention. save the new log file when youve made your changes and make one more pass. awsome prog.i have heard reports of a few minor bugs but have yet to see them duplicated in my encodes. IM sure there will always be a few that will never have good success, but i doubt its the codecs fault.**in this case**
I must say i was afraid to upgrade from 5.02 seeing how 5.03 gave me nightmares. lol give it a shot i dont think you will be sorry.

      Never bothered.

By the way, is the smoothing effect of DivX 5 still apparent in this most recent version?

i have backed up my copies of signs and the ring and have to say that they both came out clear and crisp. i went for 2 cds so it was a relitivly high bitrate.
The tv eps i have encoded i used a smoother anyways so really couldnt tell.
I have noticed quit a few things worked out in this release. no more random blocky scenes within the encodes for example like in 5.03
last night however i was playing around with CQ 1 and managed to get a few green lines at random points in a test clip. it may have been something of my fault because i was unable to reproduce the effect later. I have heard the reports of divx not writing the log file. i have not been able to confirm this seeing how my log file is written every time.
to answer your questoin. even at lower bitrates the *smoothing* effect has been dramaticly improved. this version gives me the sharpest-cleanest encodes of any divx version to date. IMO worth the upgrade, even from 5.02.

          Which smoother do you use?

Well, it seems to be a little more "precise" than the previous version, anyway i ever used divx5.x in dual pass mode, so, even using 5.03, i always had perfect results, but with this version i have a little problem:

It's totally impossible to use TMPGEnc:
the nth pass doesn't work ("this codec can't be used for some reason" or somethin' like that)
and the bitrate can't be changed.

Anyway, using flask/virtualdub/dvd2avi the quality is perfect!

how do you use that smoother? Also has anyone noticed a divx icon in the right hand corner of the video when you start up your newly encoded movie, that has been encoded using 5.04.

                @ glanz

divx5 is a little less sharp than for example xvid or divx3
thus it is smoother - there is no particular option

if you want to use a smoother take convolution3d

the logo you're talking about was introduced with version 5.03 and can be disabled in the playback options.

i did some testing today and encountered a problem while trying to skip to next keyframe when i opened a file in virtualdub that i captured with divx 5.04. virtualdub didn't crash but when you skip to next keyframe it shows no picture and below in the status bar you can see the following statement:

Internal error: MMX state left on: C:\p4root\dev\VirtualDub\source\VideoSource.ccp:16 56

anyone else encountered this? can it be solved?
besides this i like the results. better quality of picture compared to previous versions.

                          *just* ?

i tried it a couple of days ago

...and found it much better than xvid!

i did back to the future II with some ~800kbps.

in the beginning at ~minute5:00 when marty, doc and jennifer fly in the delorean there was heavy rain on the windscreen.
those scenes did look quite bad with xvid (extrem blocky) but way better with 5.05.

Sure, Xvid gives many "deblocking" problems

Anyway even if there are inperfections in the source, the "smoother" effect of divx can erase them, if u try to do the same with xvid....well results are always worse.

I already used 5.05 to recompress some anime movies (asf/realMedia/wmv...it has been an hard work), results are perfect even if i used only a soft filter (noise filter of TMPGEnc) to erase all the s**t (expecially for RealMedia...i really hate that extention)
i tried to do use Xvid and I found out that....well, RealMedia is not too bad!
