first, there is no need to copy the message into 2 posts.....

you can get the ac3 codec in the link to tsunami codec and filter pack 3.9.9

let it do the normal choices, don't do a custom install.

              install these ac3 filters:

Download AC3Filter for free. It is DirectShow AC3 Decoder filter used to palyback AVI files with AC3 sound tracks and DVDs. Multichannel and S/PDIF support.

Try playing the file in a software dvd player such as WINDVD/POWERDVD.

Installing AC3 filter will allow you to playback the avi file
If you want to manipulate the ac3 stream, demux it using VirtualDubMod and proccess it with BeSweet

                              Depends on what you want
If you want 5.1 channel audio stick to AC3
If you only need stereo convert to mp3
What I usualy do is convert from AC3 to plain wav with BeSweet (using boost/normalise) and then mux video and the wav file in virtualDub.
Demuxing AC3: opent the avi file in VirtualDubMod; Stream-Stream List (select an audio track if there's more than one)-Demux
AC3 to wav: BeSweetGUI: Input (the AC3 file); BeSweet; check 'compress Dynamic Range'; AC3 to WAV
Mux: Open avi in VirtualDub; Audio-Wav Audio, full proccessing mode-compression MpegLayer3 128 kbs (Radium MP3 codec must be installed on your system)
                              Or
You can convert directly ac3 to mp3 with BeSweetGUI using lame
