    Divx Pro 5.02 Vs 5.05

    After the 5.0.3 version with a lot of Bugs and a short life for the 5.0.4 version, DIVX come back with a 5.0.5 version.
    By the test I made, we will see some good improvement but to the detriment of the performances .

    I made my test with the encoding of the French movie "DOBERMANN": PAL DVD, 99 minutes, 25 frames by second, in DIVX 5.0.2 et 5.05.
    Encoding:
    - FlasKMPEG 0.78.39
    - resolution: 640x272
    - Bitrate video: 870kbps
    - Bitrate audio - MP3 - 112kbps - 48KHz
    - DIVX 5.0.2 Dual pass, Bi-directional, GMC Activated, Keyframe maximum interval: 250
    - DIVX 5.0.5 Multipass 1-pass & nth, Bi-directional, Home Theater, Keyframe maximum interval: 250

    Computer used for the test:
    - Pentium 4 2.53GHz@2.87GHz
    - 512 MB DDR SDRAM

    Résults:

    DIVX 5.02

    Encoding Speed

    1st Pass:
    - Frames average: 35 fps
    - Encoding time: 70 minutes

    2ème Passe:
    - Frames average: 36 fps
    - Encoding time: 69 minutes

    Total Encoding Tme:
    - 139 minutes, then 40 minutes more than the lenght of the movie

    DIVX 5.05

    Encoding Speed

    1st Pass:
    - Frames average: 37 fps
    - Encoding time: 69 minutes

    2nd Pass - nth:
    - Frames average: 28 fps
    - Encoding time: 87 minutes

    Total Encoding Tme:
    - 154 minutes, then 55 minutes more than the lenght of the movie

    Where is the improvement?
    I studied well the picture quality and there is a clear improvement of compression for this new version with a better background management. Compression is less visible and the image is more stable.
    The DIVX player doesn't have the Bugs of the 5.0.3 version anymore.
    In fact, all bugs of the 5.0.3 version have been removed. The 5.0.5 version is a true new version but we hope they will do something get an encoding as fast as the 5.0.2 version.

    Conclusion:
    The picture quality will be the only reason to use now the 5.0.5 version. 10% slower than version 5.0.2, it is not finally so much in condition of course to pocess a powerful computer.

    Conclusion: 10% slower than version 5.0.2
    what is this conclusion based on - one single test???

    my experiences are different.
    same speed for pass two or up to some 15% increase - using mv-file

      Well I did with this movie just for example. I used to do it to all now my DIVX NTSC or PAL and unfortunately, the result is the same. What kind of processor do you use? Maybe it's just a bad optimization for Intel P4. I heard some weeks ago that DIVX optimize their codec for AMD Athlon XP and Athlon 64... or else it's because I didn't use the "mv" file Thanks for the tips because it's not checked by default!

        it actually is an athlon

        and please keep in mind, that not two films are identical in terms of transcodingspeed.

        that of course wouldnt explain a second pass taking longer than a first one, but....

          I tried to encode with the MV file activated with the Multipass/nth encoding and the original 2 pass encoding with the 5.05 version and unfortunately I still have the same problem... Why I do not have this problem with the 5.02 version?
