In order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

    1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

"Compression: Unknown (tag 2000)" means the file contains an .AC3 audiostream...

If you are using TMPGEnc, do the following:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

                "what codec do i need"

An .AC3 codec, if you don't already have one installed.

Are you able to play the .AVI with audio?

What software and procedures are you presently using to convert to DVD-compliant format?

                "thanks for all your help"

                My pleasure ;>}

                  AC3 Codec

yes i can play all the avi films with sound

the problem is when i try to re-encode it to a dvd format, i tryed to do it like you said with TMPGEnc but still no sound on the end file, i tryed vcd,svcd,mpg1 & 2,dvd but nop none had audio

i use neodvd to finish the encoding, it will even encode from a divx file well till i find one with ac3

so i have tryed all diffrent ways to re-encode to divx or whatever with stereo and then out to the dvd format with neodvd

i even tryed pinnical 8, but i fount it SH*T (sorry for the language)

i just installed nimo9b beta1 with all the audio

but i must have a codec missing some where

                  any Ideas ?

                  thanks

search the forum or google and you'll find alternative ac3 codecs, which you might want to install.

                      All Sorted

                      All Sorted

just in case anyone is reading this with the same prob
get avi2vcd, in there is a small program called decompress, OK so you loos the ac3 and have to settle with stereo, but at lest the file can be encoded to a dvd format

thanks for all your help anyway
