question about virtualdub

im multiplexing a video file and a wav file with virtualdub. it does it fine when i multiplex the wav with the video, but when i tell it to compress the audio to mp3, it will only do it for the stereo settings. first of all, better quality is preferred; and secondly the audio becomes out of sync, but it is perfectly in sync with the wav. how do i fix this?

You need to install either the LAME or Radium (FhG) MP3 codec before you can convert a WAV to MP3...

i have installed them, i have the options. i edited the question, it's kind of a different problem now... basically all i need to know how to do is how to convert the wav in the mulitplexed video file to mp3 and keep it in sync and, preferrably, 128kbps with the divx encoder...

extract the original VBR audio.
Convert it to PCM using LAME or WINAMP.

Convert the PCM wave to 128kbps CBR mp3 in LAME.

Open the AVI and choose the new audio source.

Save the new AVI.

1) Load your already multiplexed DivX-video and WAV-audio file into VirtualDub (or one of its variants).

2) Set "Video" "Direct Stream Copy"

3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"

4) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" - and (assuming the .WAV audio is 48,000Hz) choose 48,000Hz MPEG Layer 3 (.MP3) 128kbps

5) Save with a new filename

whenever i choose 128kbps, an error message comes up that says the codec jammed or something like that, how do i fix this?

1) Won't you be good enough to post the EXACT wording of the error message?

2) Just as an experiment, try selecting 96Kbps instead...

when encoding to 128kbps, the error message says, "The operation cannot continue as the target audio codec has jammed and is not compressing data. Codec state for driver 'DivX Audio Compressor':"
the divx one will only work when it says 'stereo for Divx ' or mono... after it. and for mpeg layer 3 the highest i can go is 56 kbps.

It would appear then that, despite your earlier post, you do NOT have the Radium .MP3 codec installed. To confirm whether you do or don't:

1) Open VirtualDub

2)From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Full Processing Mode" - and then select "Compression" - and then select "MPEG-Layer3"

3) If you DO have the Radium .MP3 codec installed, you should see listings up to 48,000Hz with sampling rates of up to 320kBits/sec...

ya, it appears i don't have it, and i thought this might be the case so i went looking for the codec, and apparently i don't know enough sites, since all led me to riphelp.com, and the link wouldn't work, or something...it just wouldn't download. so do you know of a site that will work?
